Capable little sharpener,
By Marc (London UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gerber Pocket Sharpener (DIY & Tools)
I have used several straight blade sharpeners over the years, and this I can describe as very capable of putting a decent edge of most knives. You'll not get a razor's edge as a result (razor = can shave with it), but it will certainly take off any burrs on the blade and with the fine ceramic side you'll get a nice even sheen on both edges of the blade. This sharpener weighs virtually nothing and can be kept in a pocket without knowing it's there. If you after a serious sharpener, you might be better looking for a ceramic rod style sharpener from the likes of GATCO, which will allow you to put your own angle of edge on your knife, whereas with this Gerber you are restricted to their specific angle, which may not suit every blade. All in all, this is a good sharpener, which is ideal for a camping trip away as a back up in case your blade gets dull - but probably not suitable for a permanent sharpener.

For those who know a blunt knife is a dangerous knife.,

Excellent and simple to use. Being into outdoor pursuits I know the value of a sharp knife. This little sharpener is excellent. It will put an excellent edge on all but the cheapest and nastiest of knives (they normally require something a little harsher to start them off).
The two grades make the sharpener versatile. Start with the course grade to bring the edge up and then finish with the fine. After that, all you normally need is a couple of wipes over the fine grade before using the knife to return it to a razor sharp edge. I have purchased a number of them in the past for both myself and friends and family. I am having to purchase another because we have finally worn out the kitchen one after over five years of very regular use.

simplicity,
This review is from: Gerber Pocket Sharpener (DIY & Tools)
This really is simple little product. The plastic moulding is sturdy and there is a depression for your thumb/finger grip, but it does not act as a safety guard. As with any tool, you need to exercise caution.
You need to be careful with the angle in which you draw the blade through the sharpening rods as the blade can cut into the plastic housing. My only gripe with this product which lost it a star: I have a Gerber lock knife which has a circular rod that runs through the back edge of the blade to allow for 1 hand opening, this rod interferes with the sharpening tool, it prevents the full length draw of the blade and as such it can only sharpen the top 3/4 of the blade. If you have such a knife you may be a little dissapointed. If your knife is just a flat blade, then it is an ideal light-weight toolbox/rucksack additive.
