Product Description

Natural family planning with our digital cycle thermometer for determination of the time of ovulation. Chart your Basal Body Temperature & predict ovulation - your most fertile time of the month to conceive a baby! (Free BBT Chart provided). When a woman ovulates, a rise in body temperature takes place in order to provide a more fertile environment for conception. By monitoring when this temperature change occurs, you can determine when ovulation takes place in your cycle. Basal temperature is the lowest normal body temperature of a person immediately upon awakening in the morning - BEFORE you get up, move around, eat, drink, smoke, talk - if possible, while you are still "half asleep". The best reading of your basal temperature can be taken at the same time every morning when you first awake.

I bought this thermometer to chart my fertility cycle. I've been using it for a few weeks, and it has recorded a clear temperature shift to show I've ovulated. I'm really happy with this, especially as I don't measure at exactly the same time each morning - I measure as soon as I wake up. If it's really early like 3am I measure again after 6! It saves me worrying that I won't get the required 3 hours sleep again before I can take my temp. The moment I know I have to go back to sleep, it's the last thing I can do :o)

I asked a fertility awareness lady about this, and she said it's fine. She said to expect my temperature to rise slightly every hour, therefore to record my temp + time taken. Later she'll help me interpret my chart (in the UK it's an NHS service).

I was nervous about finding a good thermometer, but I'm happy with this one and these are some reasons why:

* It's great there's a choice of Celsius & Fahrenheit - Fahrenheit is is easier to chart with as it has a wider numerical range, making the changes on the graph more obvious.
* The light - it goes out as soon as the thermometer is ready to take a temperature. Afterwards, if it's dark, press for a few seconds to show the stored reading, and the light comes back on.
* It has a very soft gentle beep. It beeps whenever it turns off, whether you turn it off yourself or whether it turns itself off. If takes 3-5 minutes to turn itself off, so you will hear a 'random' beep when it does that.
* I was worried about the accuracy of digital thermometers, but found Sparklies review on Amazon very helpful. She said she sometimes gets false readings if the thermometer slips. It just shows to listen for any unusual beeps and start again.

Despite the number of faulty ones, this is still the most accurate and convenient-to-use digital thermometer - when it works properly, that is. Fortunately it has not been difficult to obtain a refund for the faulty ones, provided Amazon is notified. (Note that mercury thermometers are still the most reliable of all - even though they are now illegal to sell in the EU and the US, that kind of mercury rolls immediately into a tiny ball that's safe to deal with, unlike mercury amalgam dental fillings and those so-called "eco" bulbs!.)

To tell if your thermometer is working correctly, check your temperature three times in a row, any time. If the digital thermometer is off by more than 0.1 degrees on repeat testing, replace it. Accuracy is critical. [later note: I discovered that a thermometer that worked fine when it arrived could become faulty after a few months so now use two thermometers simultaneously about once weekly]

Anyway, this thermometer is easy to use. It has a brief backlight when you briefly press the button to turn it on. It beeps softly to say it's finished: (a) this can be muffled if sharing a bed and (b) do NOT stop then, these beeps are WRONG (on all digitals). Continue for another THREE minutes; if you briefly check while doing this, you'll find it continues to go up slowly. Only then briefly press the button to turn it off. If you don't, it will turn itself off after 10 minutes anyway (but the battery will run out sooner).

There is a choice of F or C temps. If you press and hold the button, it will give the last 10 readings in succession, so you don't have to turn on the light if it's still dark, you can check later, after you rise.

In addition to the features mentioned, this thermometer also has:

* Most importantly, it has a backlight - this is the only one besides the BD-brand thermometer that has this as far as I know, and that's one only measures to one decimal place
* Ability to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit (both with two decimal places) - many BBTs don't support Fahrenheit.
* Soft, slightly rubberish tip - no hard plastic in your mouth
* A far less noisy beep than the aforementioned BD-brand thermometer, nor does it beep repeatedly, just once the temperature has been measured

The memory function is also really useful too.

This thermometer has pretty much everything I would want in a BBT thermometer - the only one I have found that does, so it is highly recommended!

Update after a few months of use (May 2013):

Still loving the thermometer, and I'm very happy with it and very much maintain it's the best one I've ever had. However I have noticed that occasionally if it slips very slightly as I take the reading (as is quite common if you're falling back asleep when taking the reading!) then it immediately stops at that temperature and beeps indicating it's finished. So if I think this might have happened (e.g. it's beeping sooner than usual or I felt it slip) I immediately take another measurement. If it was a genuine reading then it'll be roughly the same, maybe 0.02-0.03 of a degree more at most. But more often than not it's quite a hefty amount more, we're talking 0.3-0.5 degrees, so it's clear the first shorter-than-usual reading was erroneous.

It's something to be aware of because it happens at least a few times a week for me, and at certain times of the month a reading much lower than expected could be quite concerning!
