Format:Audio CD
I've had this recording for several years and it's the one I keep coming back to. Raphael Wallfisch is a superb musician and the slow movement is particularly beautifully done; he also plays on a very good instrument because it sings out memorably in this mostly lyrical work. If you don't know Finzi's cello concerto I recommend it and this interpretation highly.

Wallfisch is indeed a wonderful artist who has both a big and dramatic tone in his cello, and also a strong flexible sensibility to new and contemporary trends! This one is simply his best, unmatched by anyone else, even by himself. In fact, he has never performed so well after this cd! The rivalling versions, either lack the heart-felt emotional output (like Yo-yo-ma's, quite strange ), or technically less satisfactory( like Tim Hugh's)! Only if Du Pre had ever played this piece, I feel perhaps he may be threatened!
Wallfisch's Moeran cello concerto is also a must in the desert island! His other cds are not essential collections, though.

Finzi needs to be heard much more as do many English composers of the first half of the 20th century. This is tuneful music, excellently played and recorded and is heartily recommended.
