Product Description

Georgie is a boy in special care - and Georgie is a very difficult boy with lots and lots of secrets. No one can get close to him and no one can trust him and Georgie lives in terrifying isolation. Until one day when it is decided that Georgie will move to the country, and when Georgie gets there he uses the change to allow for a change in himself. But it is more difficult than ever for Georgie who now has to unlock doors he has long since hidden the keys for. A powerful, moving and very passionate novel about a childs isolation and the psychological and emotional journey out.

From the Author

Focusing on the hero's inner struggle, and on his relationships with his care worker and his feisty fellow border Shannon, Georgie is an exciting (you really do want to know), involving story of a boy in a Special School, alienated from his surroundings, and from himself, who refuses to speak or to communicate in anyway.

The writing is powerful yet tender, gritty without being gratuitous, devoid of gloom, and surprisingly light in tone. And though obviously stemming from actual experiences (Georgie himself is a composite of youngsters Malachy knew- but "toned down a little to allow for optimism"), the power of the narrative is a tribute to the storyteller's art rather than the care worker's case-notes.

"It was very difficult to write. It's so difficult to give a voice to someone who is voiceless. And the plot was so personal, in a way."

(taken from an interview and feature on Georgie in Carousel Magazine, Spring 2001)

Throughout reading (and I have done so several times) I wanted to helpGeorgie. Malachy engages the reader by allowing us to see his thoughts andfeelings through Georgies eyes. I got to a point where I really felt hisstuggle in understanding his confusing surroundings. I felt relieved andoptamistic when he was responding well to the subtle, yet clever way hewas being supported.
I urge you to buy and read 'Georgie'. As well as being a challenging read;in subject matter, it lends itself to share an important lesson with it'sreader about the 'real' reasons people or children might behave and howthe way we react, may influence it. I'll leave you to find out what that'lesson' is!

Read it! 31 July 2002

This is a chilling observation of a disturbed and abused child by someone who knows what he is talking about. This also contrasts greatly with doyle's better known 'early reader' books and it is in this, his frist novel that we can see his talent really shine.
