Product Description

Album Description

To celebrate his 55th Birthday on June 26th, 1998 Georgie Fame assembled an All-Star big band for a concert at London's Forum Theatre. Featuring musicians whom he has been associated during his 39 years as a professional musician, the programme consisted of material covering a period of 34 years dating from Fame's first performances with the Harry South Big Band in 1964, through the many dates with the Count Basie Orchestra in the late 60's, and the numerous big bands throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Australasia and the U.S.A. which Georgie continues to work with up to the present day.

The band was conducted by Steve Gray with arrangements by Harry South, Tubby Hayes, Rob Pronk, Chico O'Farrell, Alan Downey, Alan Ganley, and Steve Gray himself. The arrangement of "Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde" by Chico O'Farrell dates from Fames tenure with the Count Basie Orchestra.

Personnel:
Georgie Fame (vocals) with:

Steve Gray (Conductor), Guy Barker, Derek Watkins, John
Barclay, Tony Fisher (trumpet), Pete Beachill, Richards Edwards, Mark Nightingale, Dave Stewart (trombones), Dave Bishop (baritone saxophone), Nigel Hitchcock, Peter King (alto saxophone), Alan Skidmore, Art Themen (tenor saxophone), Anthony Kerr (vibes/percussion), Dave Cliff (guitar) Robin Aspland (piano), Geoff Gascoyne (bass) Ralph Salmins (drums)

Special Guests:
Jim Mullen (guitar), Madeline Bell, Zoot Money and Ben Sidran (vocals)

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent!, 1 Nov 2004

This double-disc set has a complete big band performance on all selections, and includes material from Fame's early career ("Yeh Yeh" and "Bonnie and Clyde") and his straight-ahead '90s jazz offerings (two knockout Gershwin tunes - "Strike Up The Band" and "But Not For Me"). Fame is primarily the singer on this set rather than playing keyboards; the change in the repertoire keeps this set sounding fresh and very distinct from the excellent live sets from the mid-'90s.

I didn't really follow Fame's career until he joined Van Morrison's band, but now I find myself thoroughly enjoying catching up on the early recordings as well as staying current with most recent CD's - Relationships and Charlestons. Guy Barker returns on trumpet and Anthony Kerr returns on vibes and Pete King's soaring alto continues to be a fantastic compliment to Georgie's vocals on all of the Fame records of the last ten years. This new CD was recorded in 1998 before the aforementioned studio releases, but I think anyone hearing this one will be encouraged to seek out the others, and anyone having the other CD's will find this new one to be very distinct.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb overview of an underrated career, 8 Oct 2004
This review is from: The Georgie Fame Birthday Big Band (Audio CD)
Georgie Fame is a national treasure. Having been in at the start of the british blues boom he tasted pop stardom and quickly moved on to plough his own furrow in the r&b/jazz vein. This live concert is a celebration of his whole career with an excellent and very british big band. The highlights are too many to mention. If you've never sampled Georgie's work before this is an ideal introduction. If your a fan this is a must.

As previous reviewers have said this is fantastic. Georgie is in fantastic voice and the Big Band frequently swing like hell such as on the amazing "Jimmy McGroove" on disc 2.

The big band is a who's who of British Jazz:
Guy Barker, Mark Nightingale, Nigel Hitchcock, Peter King, Alan Skidmore, Art Themen, Geoff Gascoyne, Jim Mullen etc.

Theres 23 tracks in total over 2 discs, covering everything from 60's hits (including a stomping version of Yeh Yeh) to lovely Jazz Ballads like "My Lady".

Oh yes you should get this!
