Product Description

Product Description

Among the 18th century's most influential architectural designers and writers, Abraham Swan defined many conventions of English rococo detail. This reprint of an extremely rare and classic stylebook, compiled by the English architect nearly 250 years ago, provides outstanding examples of Palladian and Georgian architecture and design in colonial America and England.
Included are floor plans, detailed elevations, and drawings for cornices, mouldings, and other decorative elements that demonstrate Swan's unique style. Designed, in his words, more for "Gentlemen of moderate Fortunes than of great Estates who may be inclined to build Houses," Swan's designs featured such aesthetic touches as double staircases, elegant entryways, and two or three floors with spacious galleries, salons, and dressing rooms.
Invaluable to architectural historians and designers, this splendid stylebook will delight devotees of early English Georgian and American domestic architecture and interior design, cultural historians, artists, and craftworkers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad - Not Great 8 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Being a Architect, I love looking at buildings (sad I know) and really had been looking forward to getting this book. So I was a bit disappointed when I received it, the drawings and information are very good it's just a very thin book.
Worth getting if yo find it on a deal but other than that!!!???!!

3.0 out of 5 stars probably good for architects 11 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Not really what I wanted.... its just plans and architectural views I was hoping for a bit of something else. It is also very specialised, maybe all Georgian houses followed the same basic specifications..... actually I think they did :(
Never mind, just taught me to only buy books that have more pages to view before buying.

This is a very useful book for those interested in the nitty-gritty of Georgian architecture: floor plans for houses of various sizes, drawings of ornamental bridges, and architectural details including designs for whole walls.

3.0 out of 5 stars limited value for colonial adaptations of Georgian style 20 Aug 2009
By J. Dalgety - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book has great value for architects of public buildings and monuments, but little guidance on characteristics of the style that can be used in vernacular American adaptations as found on the eastern tidewater. The genius of the many builders and tradesmen of colonial times who were able to simplify and abstract the complex and ornate examples shown in this book will be readily apparent to anyone who has driven the "Plantation Tour" of Virginia's James River. Jefferson's Monticello is another good example.

If limited funds dictate the purchase of only one book on Georgian style, a better choice would be "Get Your House Right" by Marianne Cusato.
