Product Description

This 2 in 1 edition features The Spanish Bride and The Convenient Marriage - two of Georgette Heyer's hugely popular Regency novels.

The Spanish Bride

Shot-proof, fever-proof and a veteran campaigner at the age of twenty-five, Brigade-Major Harry Smith is reputed to be the luckiest man in Lord Wellington's army. But at the siege of Badajos, his friends foretell the ruin of his career. For when Harry meets the defenceless Juana, a fiery passion consumes him. Under the banner of honour and with the selfsame ardour he so frequently displays in battle, he dives headlong into marriage. In his beautiful child-bride, he finds a kindred spirit, and a temper to match. But for Juana, a long year of war must follow.

The Convenient Marriage

When the eligible Earl of Rule offers for the hand of the Beauty of the Winwood Family, he has no notion of the distress he causes his intended. For Miss Lizzie Winwood is promised to the excellent, but impoverished Mr Edward Heron. Disaster can only be averted by the delightful impetuosity of her youngest sister, Horatia, who conceives her own, distinctly original plans.

I fell in love with Juana Smith when I first read this book. I have now read most of Georgette Heyer's source material and my admiration for the this lady and Harry Smith has not diminished. My hardback is near collapse and this purchase is the start of a policy of renewing my library of her books in e form. I do not agree that the book is diminished by lack of battlefield plans as this is principally a love story between two people. If you want to find out what Juana looked like there is a portrait of her made in Paris after Waterloo available on the net. She was obviously a tough campaigner and it seems unsurprising to me that she gave her name to a town - Ladysmith! The book is a pleasure to read and gives a good impression of the life they led and the bond between them.

Two contrasting stories, The Spanish Bride being based on fact and extremely well researched. Worth getting, and both enjoyable reads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Georgette Heyer 19 Jun 2013

I had not read this book for years, and did not have it in my collection. It was like reading it for the first time, and I would recommend it to those who had not read Regency novels as a good starting point.
Georgette Heyer is superior to many others of the genre in that her research is meticulous - read the Spanish Army. You will learn so much about the Battle of Waterloo mixed with fiction that may make history more palatable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Hayer 14 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Convenient Marriage is a typical Heyer Regency Romance. Nothing to heavy, a couple of twists in the easy to follow plot and characters you genuinely like. Full of authentic details and good humour I, as ever, found it impossible to put down.

Then we have Harry Smith and Juanita, old friends of mine. In some ways a very different proposition it's based on real events and real people and yet still treated with the warm affection Heyer always has for her protagonists. As meticulously researched as was possible at the time, Heyer lays out their romance against the backdrop of the Peninsula campaign, fleshing out the vignettes and anecdotes provided by various histories and biographies and tying them into a heart warming story.

As she shows in "An Infamous Army", Heyer is capable of taking history and dragging a romance out of it without loosing it's authenticity. A classic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bundles of value 29 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This bundle is a great deal - I love Heyer, but resent paying the kindle prices just for the convenience of not having to cart about my tatty old books. The Convenient Marriage cost more in Kindle on its own (£5.22 as I write this) than the whole of this bundle (£4.74) which is a good saving. I hope they will decide to pair up more Georgette Heyer titles in this way!

As for the books - Heyer always well written and researched - especially noticeable for The Spanish Bride. I read and re-read them (have done so since my teens) and still enjoy them.
