Amazon.co.uk Review

Disney scored an unexpected hit with this goofy live-action remake of Jay Ward's Saturday-morning cartoon, a zippy Tarzan parody with topical references and absurd gags. Disney's big-screen version, George of the Jungle starring Brendan Fraser as the sweet, hopelessly inept jungle hero, puts the emphasis on slapstick and silly fun. The klutzy hero, still swinging into trees and stray boulders, saves a lost Los Angeles socialite (Leslie Mann) on safari and, completely smitten, leaves behind his tree-house home and simian best friend (an Oxford-accented ape voiced by John Cleese) to accompany the socialite back to the concrete jungle of LA, much to the frustration of her conniving fiancé (Thomas Haden Church). Fraser's enthusiastic performance enriches our hunky hero with endearing innocence and energetic pluck. The humour is spotty and consistently more juvenile than the original cartoon, but the unending parade of visual gags (including George's pet elephant Shep, transformed into an overexcited six-tonne puppy by inventive digital effects) keeps the tone light, frothy and winningly fun. --Sean Axmaker

Do not think that disney equals a kids film, because george of the jungle proves that simply untrue. Brendan Fraser could quite possibly be the king of slapstick comedy, playing the sweet but clumsy George, while Leslie Mann is stunning as the typical Disney heroine. It's predictable yes, but the jokes keep on rolling and even if you can't bear the thought of another Tarzan remake, ladies it's worth checking this out if only to see Fraser's toned bod!

Fun for all the family. The kids love the action and the adults love the jokes. Especially the ones by the porters! I'll never be able to look at a UPS van again without thinking of George.

King George 25 Aug 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
George of the Jungle has got to be one of the funniest and most carefree films (the narrator tells you whether to panic or not). Brendan Fraser simply puts so much energy and charm into his character you can't help thinking all Tarzan films should have been this way. His future love, Ursula, is so sweet, not at all annoying , perfectly suited to George in her innocence. The bad guy is someone you really love to hate, you're so happy when things go wrong for him. I'm happy I bought the film, the sheer corniness makes you laugh out loud.
