Jay Ward's fondly-remembered cartoon series about a klutzy king of the jungle gets the big-screen, live-action treatment in this comedy from Walt Disney Pictures. A young boy named George becomes lost in the jungles of the African nation of Bukuvu following a plane crash, where he's rescued and raised to manhood by an articulate ape called Ape (voice of John Cleese). George grows to become a strapping adult (played by Brendan Fraser) who is cheerful and good-hearted but not terribly bright, not to mention his nasty habit of running into trees while swinging on vines from one part of the jungle to another. Ursula Stanhope (Leslie Mann), an heiress from San Francisco, travels to Bukuvu for a safari, both to satisfy her thirst for adventure and because she's trying to get away from the snooty Lyle Van Der Groot (Thomas Haden Church), whom she is engaged to marry even though she doesn't like him very much. Lyle follows Ursula to Bukuvu, hoping to catch up with her and locate the legendary White Ape of the Jungle; when Ursula becomes stranded and is rescued by George, Lyle is determined to rescue her from the savage ape man, even though George is a greater threat to himself than anyone else. George finds himself infatuated with the lovely Ursula, and he hopes to win her heart, even though he's a bit rusty on the particulars of the human courtship ritual (Ape tries to help by lending him a copy of Coffee, Tea, or Me?). We also get to meet George's faithful pet Shep, an elephant who seems to have gotten the idea that he's a Cocker Spaniel. Blaxploitation legend Richard Roundtree also appears as Bukuvu dignitary Kwame.~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Do not think that disney equals a kids film, because george of the jungle proves that simply untrue. Brendan Fraser could quite possibly be the king of slapstick comedy, playing the sweet but clumsy George, while Leslie Mann is stunning as the typical Disney heroine. It's predictable yes, but the jokes keep on rolling and even if you can't bear the thought of another Tarzan remake, ladies it's worth checking this out if only to see Fraser's toned bod!

George of the Jungle has got to be one of the funniest and most carefree films (the narrator tells you whether to panic or not). Brendan Fraser simply puts so much energy and charm into his character you can't help thinking all Tarzan films should have been this way. His future love, Ursula, is so sweet, not at all annoying , perfectly suited to George in her innocence. The bad guy is someone you really love to hate, you're so happy when things go wrong for him. I'm happy I bought the film, the sheer corniness makes you laugh out loud.

Fun for all the family. The kids love the action and the adults love the jokes. Especially the ones by the porters! I'll never be able to look at a UPS van again without thinking of George.

having heard a couple of reverential references to this film on the Mark Kermode/Simon Mayo show, i took the plunge.
they were spot on; this is a live action classic, works on both adult & kid levels, up there with 'Toy Story'.
yes, it's that good.
i've never heard our 4-year old son laugh so much at a film. tears of laughter all round. he even suggested we show this film for his impending 5th birthday party!
no higher recommendation.

There have been stories that have fascinated me as a child and as a man; Tarzan of the Apes is one of them. Didn't we all grow up on Jonny Weismuller and the TV version?

I even read the book after seeing the Greystoke movie and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I was, I believe, ready for a bit of parody on the subject. And I was not wrong.

My son introduced me to this when he was younger. George of the Jungle: a story of the young baby left orphaned and left to live with the apes, a typical Tarzan story, but not with a talking ape or an elephant that thinks it is a dog? Surely not?

But yes, in this film, anything goes. Buy it and enjoy it. I have and I do.

Watch out for that treeeee! Ouch!!

Brilliant film, I first watched it in 1997 and I still watch it today. I couldn't imagine anyone but Brendan Fraser as the endearing hero George, he plays the part perfectly! A great family film which will leave both adults and children laughing from start to end.
Great delivery too, I ordered the DVD on a Wednesday afternoon just after Christmas and it was delivered the following morning - I hadn't even asked for next day delivery! Very impressive.
