Public insights into a private character.,
By t.paice@student.salford.ac.uk (Manchester) - See all my reviews
This review is from: George Lucas: Interviews (Conversations with Filmmakers) (Paperback)
This is a collection of interviews with George Lucas, collected by Sally Kline from a variety of sources dating back to the early seventies. I found it extremely useful in writing my dissertation as the material in this book was practically unobtainable everywhere else I tried to look. From these interviews there is the clear perception of a man who is a tortured perfectionist, often having been (as he sees it) persecuted by the Hollywood studio system of the seventies, and how he overcame by escaping the rat trap, fleeing to San Francisco. There are also insights into a man who has evolved through various roles of cameraman, editor, director and producer and how his snowballing industries (ILM, Lucasfilm, Lucasarts Entertainment, Skywalker Ranch) have grown. There is also an interview with a reporter from Playboy, introducing an interesting insight to what some people might consider as a typically asexual personality. What I liked particularly about this book is the sense of awareness that one gets that there is a lot more to George Lucas than meets the eye; his own comments on the value of hard work and perseverance are apt as we learn how this one time teen-racer and drop-out turned out to be a conqueror of the universe!! All in all, this was an intriguing look by other people at the myth that surrounds this enigma, whose films (as the book highlights) shout volumes about his life, and who is much more than just the creator of the Star Wars universe.

Informative but a little repetitive,
By Mario G. Perez Fonseca "Gerry Blue" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: George Lucas: Interviews (Conversations with Filmmakers) (Paperback)
Well, this is a great book that helps you know more about the 20th century greatest myth maker: Mr. Lucas. Although the book is a little repetitive (You just can read so many times the story behind Thx or how he became a film maker) it lets you inside the professional life of a man known for not giving many interviews in a year. The best article is by far the 1997 interview-story that John Seabrook wrote. And here's a little note for the editors, in page 186, the writer mentions that Lucas adopted 3 daughters, so next print you may want to correct that one. Enjoyable book, but get the cheap edition :-)

Good - agree that is a bit repetitive,
By Will Jerom - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: George Lucas: Interviews (Conversations with Filmmakers) (Paperback)
Content Summary and Review: The book is valuable for collecting a variety of different interviews with George Lucas under one cover. There are many interesting perspectives to be found here, however, there is also a great deal of redundant material. One interview in several instances covers much the same material as another, and the repetition can be boring, obviously. If you are interested in finding out about Lucas' Life, the Pollock biography should suffice. Most of the material in this book is also in that one. A few quotes, ideas, perspectives are new here, and of course the major disadvantage is that the book covers only interviews regarding the 1st three movies; no updates for later interviews or articles. So - not bad, informative - but a better, more complete, and less repetitive source of information on Lucas could be produced.

STar Wars, yes, but what of the Grail?,
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: George Lucas: Interviews (Conversations with Filmmakers) (Paperback)
Wouldn't it be great for Lucas to turn his genius to an epic for our time, one that has relevance. He missed Lord of the Rings. HE has a change to do Defenders of the Holy Grail, but somone will probably beat him to it. We need movies that connect us with today's emotions, GEORGE
