5.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable and enjoyable. 8 Sep 2011
By ACB (swansea) TOP 50 REVIEWER
There are some character actors that draw and engage an audience particularly at that 'relaxing time' in the evening. Martin Shaw (George Gently) is one. Others that immediately spring to mind include George Cole, John Thaw and David Jason. This series continues the basic theme of Alan Hunter's novels. Set in the 1960's,this is undemanding viewing with a warmth and darkish humour. All detectives need a sidekick. John Bacchus (Lee Ingleby) provides the buffetting and brunt of his boss's frustrations as well as the suspicion of improprieties with relationships concerning his wife. The episodes have guest appearances from the superb Warren Clarke as Charles Hoxton (another tremendous character) and delightful Sarah Lancashire as Mallory Brown. The 180 minute 2 DVD's include some off-scene activities, but the nitty gritty are the series' moments. Unexplained dead bodies, background Durham University rebellions, Russians, Reds, submarines. Lean back and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great British television! 3 Dec 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
ACB Swansea sums up the series beautifully. Martin shaw and Lee Ingleby as usual make a perfect team. Just great British television. Do not know why, but anything Martin Shaw does is always superb. Perfect for your christmas stocking!
The only complaint i have is that we only get two episodes and that is a bit mean!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia at it's best 15 Sep 2011
We seem to be spoilt for choice with all these semi-period dramas hitting our screens but George Gently was around before Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire. Series Three may be a short one, but its fantastic quality. Dark, funny, visually appealing, its very nostalgic and superbly acted

5.0 out of 5 stars Spoiler Warning ! 23 Sep 2011
I love this series intelligently realised/written/acted, an object lesson in how to it to the alternatively dreadful "Vera".
Martin Shaw is excellent as are the rest of the cast, alot of time and thought has obviously gone into re creating the "real" NE as per 1967 not a geordie version of Carnaby Street. It is also the first series to filled back "home" in Co Durham rather than Ireland ,so there are some nice genuine locations.
There are only 2 episodes and my enjoyment of episode 2 was spoiled by the putting of the extras on disc 1 (and me being stupid enough to watch them - but in my defence at the time I thought there would ,maybe, be some more on Disc 2)....They contain a very, very major spoiler ,why do "they" do this? there is as much room on disc 2 to include it there, all very thoughtless..
So,to sum up if you like a quality well balanced, intelligent detective series this is definitely your cup of tea .. just stay away from the extras !!

GEORGE GENTLY, Series 3. This is a British television series that debuted in 2007 on the BBC. The crime/drama/British mystery production has aired on PBS stations in the United States. The show centers on Chief Inspector George Gently, an old school copper, once one of the few good men at Scotland Yard. On the eve of his retirement, the world-weary cop decides to pursue one final murder case, suspecting that it was committed by a gangster who's already gotten away with the murder of Gently's own wife. So, as played by the sixty-something Tony® nominated Martin Shaw, Gently relocates to Northumberland, in the North East of England, tucked in just below Hadrian's Wall, a relic of the Roman occupation of Britain a millennium or so ago. Gently takes on headstrong sidekick John Bacchus (Lee Ingleby, NICHOLAS NICKLEBY); starts solving murders in a time of profound change: the 1960s. The series is based on Alan Hunter's novels. In DVD format, there is a 2-disc boxed set, running approximately 176 minutes, widescreen format. The entertainment is also available screened. And, praises be, thanks to RLJ Entertainment/Acorn, subtitles. Or how else would anyone on this side of the pond understand a word of that local dialect?

The episodes are:
Disc 1
Gently Evil

Gently and Bachus are called to a crime scene at a working-class boarding house, where they find a young woman brutally beaten to death. But her eyes have been discreetly covered with a white handkerchief. The victim, a ‘good time girl’ semi-prostitute, carried her daughter’s birth certificate in her purse. The name of the child’s father was crossed out and "Satan" penciled in. As they follow this lead, Gently and Bacchus probe the awful secrets of a family that seems to suffer from, and harbor, pure evil.
