Having worked in the electrical retail business for 11 years I was at the center of the George Foreman rush and became a big fan myself from the beginning. This is now the third George Foreman I have owned and I use my unit nearly every day and for a variety of cooking challenges from morning fry up to evening steak feasts!
This George Foreman however has not lived up to the performance and build quality of my previous units. The main reason I made the purchase was having used the previous unit so much it lost it's non-stick and I realised I could do with a bigger surface area for cooking (having grown the family).
I selected the 17873 for it's size, modern design and floating hinges for even cooking (previous models could cook a fat at one end steak unevenly). On receiving the purchase from Amazon the light didn't work so it was a case of listening out for the "click" before knowing the correct temp had been reached (I never reported this but Im sure Amazon would have replaced if I had). Then I found the max temperature itself seems too high. Sausages would be very well cooked on the outside whilst the inside was just about done. Through trial and error it turned out better to put sausages on before switching the unit on and allow the growing heat to start cooking the sausage gradually. It works but shouldn't have to be done like that.
Cleaning the unit is much easier. The plates don't detach like other models but the ridges are not as big as previous models and your finger plus cloth easily fits through all grooves in all areas.
The plate size too is great and for a fry up will take 6 sausages and 3 bacon slices easily. Have also had 4 pork chops on the go too!
The design also looks good. Sleek, black with a solid handle and floating hinges, many people have commented on how good it looks on the work surface in the kitchen.
However, whilst using the George the other day I noticed the top to be a bit dirty so I wiped it over with a cloth and water. To my surprise the entire George Foreman logo came away as though it was written in felt pen! The silver writing came away without any scrubbing or detergent which I think just sums up that the finish and build quality just doesn't live up to previous standards. Maybe why it never sold that good when it was a current model????
There are better 5 portion models out there, but not at such a good price. I suppose you get what you pay for...
Not bad but wish I had my old model back. :-(
