George Foreman 10005 'Junior' Green Health Grill

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Move to a healthier lifestyle without moving away from grilled foods with the George Foreman "Junior" Grill.

Already a phenomenal success in the US where it has sold over 25 million units across the range, the George Foreman Junior Grill is a healthy alternative to conventional grilling. Whatever you grill--be it meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, seafood or even sandwiches--any excess fat or liquids is channelled down the grooves in the grill and into a collection tray at the front of the unit. Also, as the machine sandwiches the food between two grills, cooking time is also reduced as both sides cook at once and spitting is practically nonexistent because the food is encased in the grill. The instruction manual lists the different cooking times for different food.

Operation is simple; plug it in and switch it on at the plug socket. The heat indicator light will then go out when it is ready to use. The Junior Grill has enough room to cook two good sizes quarter-pounder burgers or about four regular burgers with a bit of room in two of the corners. The grill also features a rather handy bun warmer that is accessed by lifting up the clear plastic cover on the lid of the grill. There's enough room in the bread warmer to squeeze in two burger buns cut in half.

If you're not too concerned about the amount of fat you intake from conventionally grilled foods, the George Foreman grill will change this: for example, the amount of fatty liquid collected in the drip tray from two quarter-pounder burgers with 92% meat content is unbelievable. And even though a large quantity of liquid is collected in the tray, burgers remain tasty and not at all dry.

The included grooved spatulas make it easy to remove the food from the grill as they fit perfectly between the grooves on the grill. A new addition to the grill is a set of removable extension feet that raise the grilling machine a further half an inch from the work surface enabling foods such as tacos or pita bread to be placed at the front for easy transfer of any grilled fillings.

Cleaning the grill is a bit more time consuming than cleaning a grill pan as you can't simply dunk it in a bowl of soapy water and attack it with a scouring pad. That said it does have a non-stick coating so you simply wipe it down with a damp cloth or kitchen paper.

The George Foreman "'Junior" Grill is a must have for anyone who uses a grill on a regular basis as it will cut down on your fat intake instantly without you needing to cut out your favourite grilled foods. Although the grill isn't that big, a smaller "Baby" version is also available. --Ben Curtis

4.0 out of 5 stars Give George a Grilling, 12 Mar 2003
By C. Hall "Chris" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The big selling point for this 'desktop' grill, was the fact that it was endorsed by an overweight boxer. It seemed baffling to me. The TV adverts were bizarre, and I thought it was just another gimmick. I was wrong.

Being a normal 20-something, I like to take a health conscious fry-up after a health un-conscious drinking binge. I had moved from frying pan to grill. And then, like the next evolutionary step, I moved from grill to George Foreman. The principal reason was that washing a grill-pan is notoriously difficult, and wiping down George is simple.

I'm not so sure that the cooking on a slope thing really makes much of a difference. Ok, I know that some fat does drain out. I also notice that if you buy cheap bacon, the water they use to make up the weight of the pack pours out into the catching tray. In fact, it is a real eye opener in terms of budget food make-weight.

I also sacked the toasted sandwich maker in favour of the grill - it does a mean toasty.

Overall, it has become a central part of my kitchen. I can now use the oven and George at the same time, rather than worrying about grill elements and so on. It is a convenience, get one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knockout! Great value and cooks really well., 28 Jan 2004
By mr_ska (London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I have had one of these 'Junior' grills for just over six months now, and I still use it nearly every day. It is great for cooking steaks, chicken, veg, and a fair few unhealthy things like burgers. It heats up quickly, and cooks the food much faster than the grill on my cooker. It is also very easy to keep clean. The secret is to clean it as soon as you can after you have finished cooking and it comes up sparkling clean really easily.

The 'bun warmer' on the top is a nice little touch, and you can use it to do a fair few other things. The only problem you will have with this grill is throwing away all the fat that comes out of the food you cook, and that's only because the fat doesn't look nice!

Overall this grill is great value, it is big enough to cook pretty much anything you want for one or two people, but it isn't so big that you are heating up a huge space with nothing in it, so you save money on the electricity bill. Food wise, the taste is great, and the food comes out looking good too.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a little superstar, 20 Jan 2004
By P. Hall "Peeps1966" (Hampshire UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Bought the Junior Grill on the recommendation of friends and it's such a great machine. We're using it most days - just put the food in, shut the lid and get on with something else for a few minutes. Food is cooked in half the time it takes in a conventional cooker or grill and it cleans up a treat afterwards. It cooks bacon in a nano-second!, chicken breasts & frozen quarter pounders in around 6 mins. I've also roasted vegetables on it and it cooks a mean toasted sandwich. The big shock is seeing how much fat drains away - this feeling is then replaced by the smug satisfaction that the fat isn't going in you. Basically I love my George and it gets a big thumbs up.
