Product Description

Product Description

In a broadcast to the nation in September 1940 King George VI announced the institution of the George Cross - a civilian equivalent of the Victoria Cross awarded to recognize the many acts of supreme gallantry being performed outside of the battlefield.

From Thomas Alderson, the first recipient of the medal, who heroically rescued several people from trapped houses during one terrible Blitz night, to Lance Corporal Matthew Croucher, who threw himself onto a live grenade in the Helmand province to save the lives of his comrades (and somehow survived), to Barbara Harrison, an air stewardess who died in 1968 after helping many passengers escape from an onboard fire, this book tells the amazing stories of everyone of the George Cross's 159 direct recipients.

GEORGE CROSS HEROES pays tribute to the extraordinary courage displayed by so many of the commonwealth's men and women in so many incredible situations over the last 70 years.

Nothing new - 21 Feb 2011
By lizzie
Format:Hardcover
There is nothing new in this book - it appears to have been sourced from other writers without any new material added - even the latest two GCs entries have factual errors - one has to question the research and the editing -
any work of reference surely requires new information that has been independently researched - i found almost none in this latest book on the GCs.
That all those GCs who are exchange GCs have been excluded is an insult to HM the Queen and her father who created them GCs as well as to those recipients who are still alive. I wasted my money buying this book.

Grorge Cross Heroes 9 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover
Another of Lord Ashcroft's books about medals/heroes. Ideal for anyone interested in reading
about people who go the extra mile for whatever reason. Very well presented and a very good
read.

This drawback of this book lies in its format: It is nothing more than an extended form of the Register of the George Cross presented in chronological rather than alphabetical order with some photographs as a centrepiece. It therefore contains hundreds of individual stories rather than one big story and is therefore rather disjointed. The individual stories are good though.
