Julius Caesar (Alec Guinness) arrives in Egypt and attempts to settle the dispute over who should rule Egypt, Cleopatra (Genevieve Bujold) or her brother Ptolemy (Jolyon Bates), by having them rule jointly but the ambitious Cleopatra has other ideas. This adaptation of the George Bernard Shaw play lacks the lavishness of the better known 1945 film version. But the lack of pageantry allows more attention to Shaw's text without the distraction of spectacle. The director, James Cellan Jones, lets the story unfold simply so that the political maneuvers are at the forefront. Guinness plays Caesar with an air of resignation rather than power and his chemistry with Bujold is good. Bujold makes for a cunning, sexy Cleopatra with her impish, wicked grin. Though much of Shaw's play has been severely edited, it still makes for a satisfying production. The minimal score is by Michael J. Lewis (THEATER OF BLOOD). With Margaret Courtenay as Ftatateeta, Iain Cuthbertson as Ruffio and Clive Francis as Apollodorus.

The Simply Media DVD from Great Britain is a nice sharp 1.33 transfer.

Some of the comic aspects of the play are missing in this production, but still so interesting. Also interesting in that Guiness was younger when this was shot than Plummer in the recent live theater version from Canada by quite a number of years yet Plummer seems younger. This is not a criticism, just an observation.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a REGION 2 DVD, but a good performance of a classic Shaw play 25 Feb 2013

A young Genevieve Bujold and a not so young Alec Guinness play the leads in this TV production of Shaw's comedy. They're both entertaining: Bujold captures at least some of the heroine's infinite variety, and Guinness is quite fine as the world-weary but still game Caesar. Margaret Courtney is a fine Ftatateeta. The play has been cut quite a bit, but it moves along briskly. This is not a lavish production, but it is an intelligent one, and I'm glad it's finally on DVD. However, this disc would not play on my computer (Amazon did not, at least initially, advise that this was a Region 2 DVD) and I had to watch it on my computer. The image is a bit murky at times betraying its age (1976). I have notified Amazon of the Region 2 issue.
