The Geometry of Love by Jane Blank is a really good read. Set in Sheffield and the ghetto-suburbs of 1980s Lille, a white middle-class girl, secretly marries an Algerian man twice her age and begins a new life as a Muslim wife in Northern France. The final climax is played out between her and her younger friend, the narrator, for whom friendship has become obsession. The story is told in flashback from the younger girl's point of view and begins with a prologue taken from later in the book. Here she has become obsessed with her friend's husband, Omar - embroiled in a dangerous triangle of love.

This is an excellent story of adolescent friendship, love & obsession. It was written in an adult way dealing with adult issues including the friends' obsessive attachment & their sexual desires. Jane is probably only a little younger than I am & she evoked the atmosphere of the 70's/80's disco scene perfectly. I was able to identify with these girls & really cared what happened to them. A real page turner using a clever device in the prologue to draw the reader in but not give away the story. Hope this gets the recognition it deserves as it is better than a lot of stuff on the best sellers list.

Touching, funny, intimate coming of age story that weaves it's way curiously between an enjoyable read that you can't put down, to achingly awkward and almost disturbing adolescent complexities that ask fundamental questions about love of all kinds.
