Book Description

6 Aug 2001 Design Briefs
At last, a mathematical explanation of how art works presented in a manner we can all understand. Kimberly Elam takes the reader on a geometrical journey, lending insight and coherence to the design process by exploring the visual relationships that have foundations in mathematics as well as the essential qualities of life. Geometry of Design-the first book in our new Design Briefs Series-takes a close look at a broad range of twentieth-century examples of design, architecture, and illustration (from the Barcelona chair to the Musica Viva poster, from the Braun handblender to the Conico kettle), revealing underlying geometric structures in their compositions. Explanations and techniques of visual analysis make the inherent mathematical relationships evident and a must-have for anyone involved in graphic arts. The book focuses not only on the classic systems of proportioning, such as the golden section and root rectangles, but also on less well known proportioning systems such as the Fibonacci Series. Through detailed diagrams these geometric systems are brought to life giving an effective insight into the design process.

5.0 out of 5 stars a Graphic Designer must have book 7 May 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was recommended this book by one of my tutors on my Graphic Design course. I must say that it turned out to be one of the most useful and inspiring books I have ever read. Someone did point out one little glitch regarding the snowflakes and its sides. Aside from that error (depending on you agreeing to that) this book is an absolute treasure that no Graphic Designer should be without. Really well done, it utilizes transparent sheets that fit on top of the diagrams and images to explain how the composition was built. I can't stress how good this book is, pick it up from your library and I guarantee, you will come running back to purchase it.

As the title states, this book is more than ideal for anyone interested in geometry of design. From being a novice to the more mathamatically minded, the beauty of the Golden Section within nature is both fascinating and astounding. Combining this with the fact that we all intuitively abide by the rules of nature when making art or some grand deign, makes this book and subject one of the wonders of the world and maybe space too.
