This book is an excellent introduction to the key ideas in geology. This new revised edition has better quality photos than previous editions albeit the quality still is not ideal, also the layout is now much improved with insight boxes and new end of chapter things to remember lists.

The updated edition obviously contains information on more recent events and in places is much easier to understand than the previous edition. A worthwhile update that I highly recommend.

Was looking for a book that gave enough detail but not a text book, David Rothery is an expert in the field and writes in an informal way, its as though you are attending a lecture but one aimed at the general public rather than Uni. students.
Having said this don't think the book is basic but just that it starts with the basics and makes easy reading. I really enjoyed this book and have started a second by the same author..

This book is a good read for anyone who is interested in geology. Some of the topics I already knew from my A-Level Geography lessons but there were other things that were new to me. It does have a lot of diagrams but unfortunately, these are not in colour and this can make them a little bit unclear. There is a section in the middle for the book that has a few coloured pictures though. At the end of the book, there are some appendices that will direct you to websites that contain even more information. There is a small rock guide at the back but this is very basic and there are no pictures. This book covers…
-The formation and structure of the Earth
-Rock formation
-Planetary geology
-Palaeontology
-Minerals and other resources
-And much more
If anyone wants an introduction to geology, they should really read this book.

A very handy book for beginners. Simple but well written, it is a great tool for who wants to know the basics of earth science.

I suppose different people will have different expectations of this book. I have got interested in geology later than most and so have a long way to go to understand even some of it. This book has gone a long way to help.

Love the book, diagrams are good, explanations clear and not full of confusing terminology. One improvement though would have to be that the whole book would benefit from being printed in a text book style with ALL the pictures in colour and on nice white smooth paper. Ideal for those new to geology and those who wish to have clear explanations. I also think the little warnings about the use of certain terms is excellent. Definatly one to recommend!

Covering the key ideas in geology must have been a daunting prospect for David Rothery but I think he's done it very well. Now in my-mid 50s I did some reading about geology as a child and this book brought a lot of that back. But it did a lot more - it awed me with massive scales involved, and cogently explained how we know what we do about the history of the earth and the solar system. After reading this book I am au fait with the rock cycle, the three main rock types, and the macro-mechanics of rock formation, transformation and deposition. I want to know more - the geosciences are a massive area but Prof. Rothery in this book sticks to the key ideas and is not tempted down any of the illuminating corridors of minuteae where bunnies like me are likely to find themselves 'blinded by science.'

As an undergraduate Geology student, this book helps understand key topics and explains them easily without making you feel foolish not to grasp them. Ever-present on my shelf and always referred to, this book is brilliant.
