This book not only gives an excellent description of the geology underlying this visually stunning section of the British coast but serves as an easy primer on geological terms and periods and includes details of fossils used to identify rock ages and a useful glossary. The style is aimed to suit the interested casual reader while presenting a lot of information in an easy to assimilate form backed up with an extensive further reading list. Diagrams and photographs are clear and the book includes a review of useful minerals from prehistoric flints to Beer Stone - a creamy white limestone - worked from Roman times to the present day. The book also shows that the Jurassic Coast is something of a misnomer - Jurassic rocks only begin to appear to the east of Seaton with earlier Triassic rocks forming the bulk of the rest with earlier still Permian rocks in the extreme West of the area. Maybe a film tie-in influenced the tourist boards?

I was very pleased with this book, the introduction is from Prof Iain Stuart. This is an excellant book for both the home and if on site at locations on the Jurassic Coast - it has very detailed, high-quality site photos with clearly identified geological horizons overlaid on these, which can be related to in the field.
At the rear of the book are fold-out colour geological cross sections showing the coastal sections for this part of the south coast, as well as a good geological map of the area.
The book is very well presented, with quality colour plates and detailed fossil identification plates. Clear extracts of OS maps for the various sites of interest.
This book is ideal for the beginner, as well as the more advanced geologist/fossil hunter ! Written by Richard Edwards, (PhD),a geologist with the Geological Survey.
This book is a must-have for any Jurassic fossil-hunter !! I fully recommend this book for general reading, if not as a comprehensive field-guide.
