I did not know there were any books on gentrification. I always had slight misgivings about it, but suspect that for most people gentrification is seen as a good thing.

This is a text book covering the literature on gentrification, and as such comes with the pros and cons that such a title might offer. Published in 2007 it does now feel a bit out of date, no reference to the coalition government or the crash in the housing market. Similarly it is quite anglo saxon in its focus. Those with a wider interest in urbanism might expect to see more reference to Chinese urbanism, Detroit or the growth of favelas. The treatment of social class also felt a bit dated.

As a survey of the literature it does take a broad view of the arguments, however the authors do persistently come back to their central point that because gentrification will displace the original working class inhabitants it is automatically a bad thing. This sort of left wing approach is something that is seriously under-represented in mainstream media, so even if you don’t wholeheartedly agree with the authors then it is good to hear what they say.

The authors are all active campaigners on gentrification issues.

Despite my initial sympathies, by the end I was less convinced by their hardline opposition to all forms of gentrification. Although there were some suggestions of alternatives, in terms of actionable housing policy recommendations the book seemed unconvincing and relatively light.

Perhaps with three authors the book ended up being longer than it needed to be, but it was an interesting and easy read from beginning to end. I am marking down to four stars because there are far to many typos, mainly words needlessly split in two.

HASH(0x981eae34) out of 5 stars The best gentrification digest! La mejor sintesis sobre la gentrificación! Le meilleure topo sur la gentrification 30 May 2009
By David Mateos Escobar - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is the best digest you will find about gentrification. It targets both specialists, researchers and simple citizens who care for social justice in the city. This book goes beyond a monographic review of gentrification process, explanation, history and future. It constitue probalby the first serious digest to comit openly with the combat against gentrification. Hopefully this will be the first step of a massive dufusion and sensitize wave.

HASH(0x987a3a50) out of 5 stars Decent Study of Gentrification 11 May 2011
By wemmickers - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
As an empirical study of gentrification this book is excellent; however, I must note that it is also another revision of traditional liberal ideology garbed in Marxian language. This makes the author's arguments rather weak because they too often call on the state to intervene in a process that it has purposefully made.
