Product Description

You’ll find plenty of bodies stretched out on a summer beach – but they’re not usually dead...

In a British seaside holiday resort at the height of the season, you would expect to find a promenade and a pier, maybe some donkeys, ‘Kiss-Me-Quick’ hats, candy floss and kids building sandcastles. You would not expect to find a naked corpse, punctured with stab wounds, lying on the sand.

Chief Inspector George Gently is called in to investigate the disturbing murder. The case has to be wrapped up quickly to calm the nerves of concerned holidaymakers. No one wants to think that there is a maniac on the loose in the town but with no clothes or identifying marks on the body, Gently has a tough time establishing who the victim is, let alone finding the killer. In the meantime, who knows where or when the murderer might strike again?

About the Author

Alan Hunter was born in Hoveton, Norfolk in 1922. He left school at the age of 14 to work on his father's farm, spending his spare time sailing on the Norfolk Broads and writing nature notes for the Eastern Evening News. By 1950, he was running his own book shop in Norwich and in 1956, he wrote the first of 45 George Gently novels. He died in 2005 aged 82.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gently at the seaside 16 April 2011
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Gently is called in to investigate a dead body on the beach under the pier at Starmouth. There is nothing to identify the corpse and the case leaves Gently scratching his head and eating many peppermint creams. It seems as though he may have to give up and admit defeat until he manages to find out a bit about the dead man by asking the right questions of the right people. It soon becomes clear that there may be a link with the sudden appearance of counterfeit US dollar bills which keep appearing.

I found the book interesting reading as it shows how different things were in the nineteen fifties. This is a case with an international aspect to it and Gently wonders whether he will find it taken off him by Special Branch before he has really got to grips with it. I like the characters in these novels and the interaction between them. There are flashes of humour and an intriguing mystery which will keep the reader guessing.

Readers today may find it a little old fashioned as there is little on the page violence and no bad language. The attitudes and morals were different then and the book needs to be read in the context of the time in which it was written rather than judged by today's standards. If you like books which present you with a puzzle to be solved then you will enjoy this book. If you enjoy the Golden Age detective story writers then you will enjoy Alan Hunter's Gently series.

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT IN THE SAME LEAGUE 3 Oct 2010
By Mr. D. L. Rees TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
On Starmouth's beach, a naked stabbed body. Floundering, the local police send for Chief Inspector George Gently. Blowing perfect smoke rings when not chewing peppermints, he uncovers a major conspiracy....

Time has not been kind to this 1956 novel - most characters stereotypes devoid of subtlety, the style throughout rather pedestrian. ("The chief super's head remained sideways in indication of his supreme patience.") At one point (chapter 12) everything becomes bogged down in verbiage. A contrived, highly melodramatic finale brings success, Gently to be showered with encomiums (a word I had to look up).

Enjoyable aspects have Gently immersing himself in the resort's haunts where potential witnesses may be found, verbally sparring with the local Mr. Big. Be advised, though, there is a great gulf between the novel and the BBC series, the latter belonging to a far higher league.

4.0 out of 5 stars DUST JACKET SYNOPSIS 18 Jan 2009
Format:Hardcover
The English resort town of Starmouth was set on its ear by the "Body on the Beach Murder." When Chief Inspector Gently, the peppermint-eating C.I.D. man, took over, all the local police had to go on was a naked corpse, with marks of torture and four deep stab wounds - and absolutely no means of identification.

In his perambulations about the beach and honky-tonk piers, Inspector Gently pieces together clues gathered from such odd sources as a professional lady of the evening, two teen-age menaces, and the village idiot.

It quickly appears that the mere identity of the victim is just the beginning, and behind the murder is a vicious plot, highly organized, and of international implications.

The same expert knowledge of detective methods shown in Mr. Hunter's first book, GENTLY DOES IT, is evident in this new one, which will win new friends for amiable and efficient Gently.

THE SECOND IN THE CHIEF INSPECTOR GENTLY NOVELS

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay - but doubt I would read another 10 Jun 2012
By Shell
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've never seen or read any of the George Gently series and to be truthful I found it hard work to get through.

I did quite like the character but felt the book rambled on unnecessarily in some places. I wanted to get to the end to find out "who dunnit" but that was my only reason for actually finishing the book. I'm sorry to have to say I didn't read it to the end because I was enjoying it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gentle tedium 24 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The Gently stories are gentle old-fashioned police detective in the Agatha Christie style. I am afraid they are not particularly well written as the the author attributes meanings to words which are unusual (being kind) and I find extremely irritating. I have read two and that's enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Certainly different 20 May 2013
By Sandy
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As the author says, you know who has 'done it' but it's the proving of it that's difficult, which makes this different to other detective stories. Worth a read, but don't compare it to the TV series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reminiscent 16 May 2013

Alan Hunter conjures a world of the fifties with references to to the then all too recent war and great descriptive passages. His use of detail gives the reader a real sense of being there.

Easy Reading. I thought it lacked depth. TV series very well acted, and I anticipated the book would bring more depth. Unlikely to buy another Alan Hunter novel
