Synopsis

Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) and her friend Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell) are a pair of showgirls, Dorothy the sassy one looking for true love, Lorelei the blonde hoping to marry a millionaire, with her sights set on Gus Esmond, a wealthy nerd stuck under his father's thumb. When Lorelei and Dorothy take a transatlantic cruise to Paris, an undercover detective follows to find out if Lorelei is really a gold-digging schemer. Unfortunately, the irrepressible Lorelei is a born flirt and soon finds herself in a compromising position with Sir Francis Beekman (Charles Coburn), owner of a diamond mine. The girls have to use all their wits to get out of trouble and still find love and marriage. Thanks to the talents of the luminous stars and director Howard Hawks, plus stunning technicolor cinematography, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES emerges as one of the most charming, entertaining musicals of the 1950s. Marilyn Monroe, never more luminous, sings her legendary musical number 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend' (which later inspired Madonna's 'Material Girl' video). GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES is based on the hit Broadway musical which was adapted from the book by Anita Loos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monroe at her best, 19 Mar 2006
I bought this DVD as my mother and i used to watch it in the 80's and I loved it. I purchased it in 2006 (due to fond memories)and my 3 year old daughter loves it and sings to "Diamonds are a girls Best friend" all the time (her favourite song, I like Bye bye Baby).
Great songs that relate to the storyline. There is a part where Dorothy (Jane Russel) sings with the Olympic atheltes and i fast forward that (found it boring as a child, still do). Aside from that the DVD is a great buy and enjoyed by all ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES[AND BRUNETTES]---BEAUTIES--MARILYN MONROE--AND--JANE RUSSELL., 19 Oct 2009
By Mr. W. J. Wright - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES[and BRUNETTES],1953,colour,is a classic comedy.Both-MARILYN MONROE-and-JANE RUSSELL-were two stunningly beautiful women. This was the only movie these two cinema legends made together. But both actresses would make many classic movies.
This film is a very famous classic and it's script well known, that i need not really go into it's story.Monroe had a greatness for comedy roles and her comic timing was brilliant. Both ladies sing and dance brilliantly and both wear some very sexy revealing clothes.Lovely.
Also playing a good part was CHARLES COBURN.
A couple of years later-JANE RUSSELL-with her equally beautiful co-star-JEANNE CRAIN-would make-GENTLEMEN MARRY BRUNETTES[and BLONDES],1955,colour.
Regards,Bill.
