Format: Hardcover
A thoroughly enjoyable guide to a gentlemen's dress, refreshingly written from an international perspective. Roetzel is one of the few writers to go beyond preferences in suit cut between the tailors of different nations, in looking at differences in dress across the western world.

Richly illustrated with clear photographs, whilst the text sometimes appears a little sparse the key points are there. It is not a formal history of gentleman's dress, nor a detailed discussion of construction techniques, yet it covers these in passing with sufficient depth for an introductory text. It is not a guide to all the great clothiers of the world, but gives interesting insights to many. It ventures into men's accessories and casual dress more fully than many a tome.

For a general overview and introduction, particularly for those first venturing into classic dress this book is superb. Those who have read other works may find this a little light but will also find much of interest.

Content-wise this book is good. It covers a little of everything: the history of menswear, the most famous brands, what to look for when buying, and so on. There were, however, a couple of points that irked me. First, there is not much on how to combine different items of clothing, which is something I'm sure most readers would like guidance on. Second, the entire book is written in this bizarre, patronizing, 1950s-style tone. In places it works, in other places it's just annoying!

Gives a good overview on subjects like what signs to look for on a 'proper' dress shirt, how to judge a good shoe, how to fold a handkerchief. Unfortunately doesn't seem to have been revised and updated in over 10 years since pictures look dated, some of the brands and shops referred to no longer exist and men's fashion (even the bespoke timeless premium sort referred to here as gentleman's fashion) has moved on and developed.

Although the book is a little dated by about 15 - 20 years, the recommendations are classic and timeless. If you want to dress well (i.e. avoiding the contemporary tracksuit, jeans and tee shirt options) and know what to wear and when, then this book is for you. With references to the top London and continental tailors, shoemakers, etc, to follow all the recommendations requires a high level of disposable income. But all the recommendations are applicable and achievable with a bit of effort. The sections are broken down by clothing item, season, colour, etc together with famous examples of well dressed men. We can't all be Cary Grant but we can at least make an effort.

A must read for any programmer - a nice algorithm and reference manual for timeless clothing. No more ill-fitting t-shirts, or pseudo random matching of pants, shirts, shoes, jackets, etc.

The quality of the paper is in the highest standard,
but what is most important is the content.
This is encyclopedia of man's appearance, regardless of age.

Well thought out book, lots of nice pictures. Writing style is largely good, if a little dull at times. Don't take the stuff in here as gospel but it makes for an interesting read nevertheless.

This is terrific for detailed information on men's tailoring and dressing etiquette. Detailed and clear pictures. Perfect for early research into the topic.
