3.0 out of 5 stars Good overview but not up-to-date 24 Feb 2011
By mf2hd
Format:Hardcover
Gives a good overview on subjects like what signs to look for on a 'proper' dress shirt, how to judge a good shoe, how to fold a handkerchief. Unfortunately doesn't seem to have been revised and updated in over 10 years since pictures look dated, some of the brands and shops referred to no longer exist and men's fashion (even the bespoke timeless premium sort referred to here as gentleman's fashion) has moved on and developed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Subject to a couple of caveats, a good book. 24 Feb 2013
By Mash
Format:Hardcover
Content-wise this book is good. It covers a little of everything: the history of menswear, the most famous brands, what to look for when buying, and so on. There were, however, a couple of points that irked me. First, there is not much on how to combine different items of clothing, which is something I'm sure most readers would like guidance on. Second, the entire book is written in this bizarre, patronizing, 1950s-style tone. In places it works, in other places it's just annoying!

4.0 out of 5 stars An essential reference 30 Dec 2011
By DCH
Format:Hardcover
Although the book is a little dated by about 15 - 20 years, the recommendations are classic and timeless. If you want to dress well (i.e. avoiding the contemporary tracksuit, jeans and tee shirt options) and know what to wear and when, then this book is for you. With references to the top London and continental tailors, shoemakers, etc, to follow all the recommendations requires a high level of disposable income. But all the recommendations are applicable and achievable with a bit of effort. The sections are broken down by clothing item, season, colour, etc together with famous examples of well dressed men. We can't all be Cary Grant but we can at least make an effort.
