When he sits down at the table, a gentleman surveys the equipment set before him, just as a mechanic checks over the tools needed to repair an automobile or a doctor makes sure he is equipped with all the instruments to be used in surgery. Read the first page

Good Info; Covers Many Topics 20 May 2007
By R. Baker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This book covers a number of topics helpful to men and young boys who are learning good manners. Very informative for young men learning the appropriate way to behave and do things in many settings, and not just at the dinner table. The language sounds a bit "fluffy," but the information is concise and detailed.

Comprehensive, seemingly unintentional satirical book on table manners 6 Feb 2014
By J. Danny - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Having worked as a food writer for almost four years, I've always been intrigued by the lost art of table manners. I don't have any formal training in etiquette, and I've always felt that to be a missing part of my dining repertoire.

I found a copy of this book while shopping at Brooks Brothers and thought it'd be perfect for educating myself on how to not look like a tool at the dinner table. I've read countless of publications on dining etiquette but this is by far the best resource on the subject. It's written well, in a somewhat serious tone yet borderline satirical, which I think was unintentional (yet hilarious). You'll find such gems as:

"A gentleman never calls attention to another person's poor table manners, unless that person is his own child."

"A gentleman never comes to the table without his shirt."

"Even if a gentleman maintains a fine wine cellar, he does not break into it simply to indulge the tastes of whimsical friends."

You'll find more than enough information on place settings, glassware, how to properly eat challenging foods like lobster, how to butter a roll, what flowers to use for a table setting at a private dinner, and dozens of other helpful topics related to dining.

If you want to impress a date with some old world class, this book will show you how. If you want to learn how to properly a host a dinner party, you'll find it here. If you want to know how to dine at that 5-star restaurant up the street without looking awkward, get this book.

Oh, and one more thing: If you buy this book, for goodness sake don't read it at the dining table.

Got this for my grandson 15 July 2013
By Mike - Published on Amazon.com

My grandson apparently never learned good table manners at home, I knew is father had them because we raised him with table manners when he was still at home, but he never passed it on to his own son. This is a very good book and well written.
