The Hawk in reflective mood.,
By
This review is from: The Gentle Hawk (Audio CD)
The clue is in the title. This is the Hawk in reflective almost dreamy mode, but still providing moments of intense feeling within the smooth arrangements. This CD is not so hot for those who like their Hawk in straight ahead jazz mode, and the presence of strings in some of the accompanying orchestrations jars a little. The most annoying thing about this compilation is that although you get your money's worth (20 tracks, 65 minutes playing time) nowhere is there any clue about when and where these tracks were recorded, except to say all are prior to 1972! I should hope so, as the Hawk died in 1969!

Some of the coolest sounds around,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Gentle Hawk (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful album of jazz by one of the great tenor saxophonists, Coleman Hawkins. Every note is played with feeling, tenderness and great skill. There's not a weak track on this album; each one is a carefully crafted piece of musicianship. At full price this would be highly recommended - at bargain price it more or less becomes an automatic choice. Coleman Hawkins should definitely be better known, and this album is a marvellous place to become acquainted with him and his music.
