Gentle, not soft,
By
This review is from: Gentle Dog Training (Paperback)
I've read them all - and got something out of most of them - but this is the definitive dog training book. The tone is just right (Hasbrouck treats his readers like intelligent beings who have things to learn about the ways of dogs and not imbeciles who need their noses rubbed in their own inadequacies!) The content is wide-ranging and thorough, with good mix of science and good old common sense.
I recognised my mistakes on every page but, more importantly, came away from the book with optimism. Even an old dog, he tells us, can be trained and no dog is irretrievable. For practical advice backed up with science and psychology, this is the one. But don't read soft for gentle - Hasbrouck may not advocate beating and shouting but he shows his readers how to be the undisputed boss in the relationship and he takes no prisoners! if you've tried the rest and still have problems, or if you are simply interested in dog training methods, this is one for you.

this book saved my dog,
By Betty Mc Guire "BMG" (Alice, Australia) - See all my reviews

my great dane was turning crazy. Nobody could help me, clubs, behaviorists, vets, they all gave me absolute and perfect advice, but nothing did really work. My beeder just told me bout this new book and quite everything became clear. My dane now is not perfect, but as I make no big mistake, and I learnt what my dog is, life is an enchantment. I dunno this trainer, but I wish him a big succes for his book over here.

a new old story,
By William L. Cochran (Vancouver, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gentle Dog Training (Paperback)
Smart and seasoned, the author of this small book has taken the best and removed the bad from ancestral and modern knowledges about what dogs are and how they work. I dare write this is the more satisfying method about dog training I have ever heard of. Away with the brutality of the past and with the never verified incantations of behaviorism, with Hasbrouck we enter a world of clean and fast efficiency, highlighted through humour and fine writing.
