Product Description

Product Description

In recent years the concept of 'register' has been increasingly replaced by emphasis on the analysis of genre, which relates work in sociolinguistics, text linguistics and discourse analysis to the study of specialist areas of language. This book is a clear, authoritative guide to this complex area. He provides a survey of approaches to varieties of language, and considers these in relation to communication and task-based language learning. Swales outlines an approach to the analysis of genre, and then proceeds to consider examples of different genres and how they can be made accessible through genre analysis. This is important reading for all those working in teaching English for academic purposes and also of interest to those working in post-secondary writing and composition due to relevant issues in writing across the curriculum.

Book Description

The author looks at varieties of language and considers these in relation to communication and task-based language learning.

Combining Humor and Theory for ESL Instruction 21 Dec 2000
By gwinra@mctc.mnscu.edu - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Unlike the majority of TESL texts, Swales manages to treat his discipline with respect while not becoming pretentious or defensive about the lack of research backing most of the theories. His combination of humor and anecdotal examples with clear theories reminded me of Alder and Van Doren's "How to Read a Book": personable, enjoyable, and clear principles that will make experts in the field nod in agreement while providing graduate students with plenty of research topics.

A must have! 27 Feb 2011
By K. McIntosh - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Now in its second printing, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in doing genre analysis, especially in the fields of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and Second Language (L2) writing. Almost any article on the subject that has appeared in print within the past 20 years cites Swales at least once, and more likely multiple times. His IMRD (Introduction-Methods-Research-Discussion) structure, moves analysis model, and mixed-methods approach have all been tremendously influential. At the same time, Swales emphasizes commonalities with other fields like Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and New Rhetoric that may allow for more cross-disciplinary collaboration and, ideally, greater insights into the ways in which genres both shape and are given shape by the writing we do.
