I hold a BSc Maths and Physics and MSc IT, and needed to understand genetics at a detailed level for a new business proposal in the field of bioinformatics and genetics. This book is so well written that was able to understand 90% of the text. New terms are highlighted in bold text and may be referenced in the extensive glossary. The glossary also indicates the page where the term is first described allowing the user to move freely throughout the book. There is also an excellent summary at the end of each chapter. I can recommend this book, have read 700 of the 800 pages and feel have understood nearly all the material! For info the book is composed of 17 chapters:
The Molecular Basis of Heredity and Variation;
Principles of Genetic transmission;
Genes and chromosomes;
Genetic linkage and chromosome mapping;
The molecular structure and replication of the genetic material;
The molecular organisation of chromosomes;
Variation in chromosome number and structure;
The genetics of bacteria and viruses;
Genetic engineering and genetic analysis;
Gene expression;
Regulation of gene activity;
The gentic control of development;
Mutation, DNA repair, and recombination;
Extranuclear inheritance;
Population genetics and evolution;
Quantitative genetics and multifactoral inheritance;
Genetics of biorythms and behavior.
