Biography

The Genesis of the Seventies was a very different group from the Genesis of the Eighties and the Nineties - although not as different as some people would like to think.

Most of those who picked up on Genesis during the Eighties as their succession of hits encircled the globe had only the haziest idea of what had gone before. “In the later years there were people coming to our concerts who didn’t… Read more in Amazon's Genesis Store

Product Description

From Amazon.com

This 1983 effort found the trio of Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford settling comfortably into their niche as world-class hit-makers, while exploring ambitious new creative avenues. So, alongside popular--and relatively straightforward--tunes like "That's All," "Illegal Alien," "Taking It All Too Hard," "Just a Job to Do," and the subtly menacing "Mama," the band continues to explore its more complex inclinations on "Second Home by the Sea" and "It's Gonna Get Better." Both accessible and idiosyncratic, Genesis remains one of the group's most durable '80s albums. --Scott Schinder

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album, very underrated, 5 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Genesis (Audio CD)
This is such an underrated album. This was at the stage where the band had just started to reach out more to a wider audience and the first single "Mama" which opens procedings is an absolute classic.Phil Collins surpasses himself with the vocal on this track. Brilliant.

"Illegal Alien" & "That's All" were also successful singles and typified the new commercially-minded approach the band were taking at the time. "It's gonna get better" is a typical Genesis ballad of the highest order. "Silver Rainbow", "Taking It All Too Hard" & "Just A Job To Do" are also all fine tracks but they don't really stand out.

This brings us nicely on to the highlight, not only of this album, but of all the band's output since becoming a trio following the departure of Steve Hackett. I'm referring,of course, to the epic "Home By The Sea" and "Second Home By The Sea". This pair of tracks showcase Genesis at their absolute best. It marries together their new found commercial style in the former case, with their grand instrumental epic style which was their trademark during the Peter Gabriel era, in the latter. The effect is absolutely stunning. Even if you don't listen to the rest of the album, it is worth buying just for Home By The Sea. If you like Genesis even just a little bit, you will love this I assure you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Appealing pop music., 30 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Genesis (Audio CD)
This album is overloaded by pop tunes with amazingly catchy melodies that really hit the spot. I'm more of a fan the earlier Genesis stuff but I have to admit this is good. "Mama" is catchy and shows what a great voice Phil Collins has and "That's All," has a leisured cool to it that makes it instantly memorable. The two home by the sea tracks are great and "Taking it all too hard," is well written with great lyrics. The only poor track is "Illegal Alien" with some inane lyrics. Otherwise it's worth buying even if it's not the hardcore prog-rock that Genesis fans who hate this era prefer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Prog Pop, 16 Aug 2010
This review is from: Genesis (Audio CD)
I feel this album is pretty solid throughout with some outstanding songs. 'Mama', 'Home By The Sea', 'Illegal Alien' and 'It's Gonna Get Better' are my favorites as they mix intelligent songwriting with a tough pop sound. I think Phil Collins reached his vocal peak on this album, the end of 'Mama' being a good example. However, songs like 'Just A Job To Do' and 'Taking It All Too Hard', whilst good, don't have the same kind of definition.

I'd recommend this album to someone who likes pop with a twist and great sounds. Sound has always been an area where Genesis excel and again they don't disappoint on this album.
