CD Description

San Francsico sisters Wendy and Bonnie Flower (allegedly their real last name) released their lone album, GENESIS, in 1969. A dreamy soft-psych/folk-rock affair, it centered on the teenage sisters' vocal harmonies and ethereal songs. A flop at the time, it became a collector's item over subsequent decades before it was finally reissued in 2001.

A great lost '60s album, by San Francisco sisters Wendy & Bonnie Flower, this 10 song set sounds as if it was released last week. Sublime harmonies, layered jazzy production and a very accessible dash of psychedelic pop make 'Genesis' sound like the precursor of Stereolab, or the little sisters of Brian Wilson and The Mamas & Papas. The original album - worth getting for tracks like 'Let Yourself Go Another Time' and 'You keep hanging up on My Mind', both of which can make you feel glad to be alive - is supplemented by a track from the sisters' Crystal Fountain group, and 4 demos recorded for a second album that never appeared. Apparently Bonnie once turned down an offer to join The Bangles, and you can hear why they wanted her. It's an unjustly neglected classic that deserves a second chance! I've had this for two months now and it's still on heavy daily rotation.Put it this way: if any current band released a record this good, we'd all be celebrating in the streets.

This album really is a bona fide lost 60s masterpiece. The beauty of both the songwriting and the singing is of the highest quality, with 'By the sea' and 'You keep hanging up on my mind' being particularly exceptional. The album has an end-of-summer (sadness) feel to it, coupled with an uplifting beauty - like the best Brian Wilson songs. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect is the consistency; I never get the urge to skip tracks, and have been playing the CD for months!

This record is wonderful. Nothing about the title, the name of the band or the picture of them on the front cover is remotely enticing - but, make no mistake, the music is fantastic.

Does anyone around now make such intensley beautiful, ice-chilled songs such as these? Check "The paisley window pane" or "Children Laughing" just for starters. There are absolutely no fillers, only the demos at the end are a bit naff but you can easily dispense with those. Don't let the price tag put you off just buy it.
