This is such an underrated album. This was at the stage where the band had just started to reach out more to a wider audience and the first single "Mama" which opens procedings is an absolute classic.Phil Collins surpasses himself with the vocal on this track. Brilliant.
"Illegal Alien" & "That's All" were also successful singles and typified the new commercially-minded approach the band were taking at the time. "It's gonna get better" is a typical Genesis ballad of the highest order. "Silver Rainbow", "Taking It All Too Hard" & "Just A Job To Do" are also all fine tracks but they don't really stand out.
This brings us nicely on to the highlight, not only of this album, but of all the band's output since becoming a trio following the departure of Steve Hackett. I'm referring,of course, to the epic "Home By The Sea" and "Second Home By The Sea". This pair of tracks showcase Genesis at their absolute best. It marries together their new found commercial style in the former case, with their grand instrumental epic style which was their trademark during the Peter Gabriel era, in the latter. The effect is absolutely stunning. Even if you don't listen to the rest of the album, it is worth buying just for Home By The Sea. If you like Genesis even just a little bit, you will love this I assure you.
