Biography

The Genesis of the Seventies was a very different group from the Genesis of the Eighties and the Nineties - although not as different as some people would like to think.

Most of those who picked up on Genesis during the Eighties as their succession of hits encircled the globe had only the haziest idea of what had gone before. “In the later years there were people coming to our ... Read more in Amazon's Genesis Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Appealing pop music. 30 May 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This album is overloaded by pop tunes with amazingly catchy melodies that really hit the spot. I'm more of a fan the earlier Genesis stuff but I have to admit this is good. "Mama" is catchy and shows what a great voice Phil Collins has and "That's All," has a leisured cool to it that makes it instantly memorable. The two home by the sea tracks are great and "Taking it all too hard," is well written with great lyrics. The only poor track is "Illegal Alien" with some inane lyrics. Otherwise it's worth buying even if it's not the hardcore prog-rock that Genesis fans who hate this era prefer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still Going Strong 11 July 2009
By Dave_42
Format:Audio CD
It has often been said that Phil Collins moved Genesis from progressive to popular music, but I think the group managed to maintain at least a progressive feel in a lot of their work. I think it is fair to say that they did have many songs which one would not call progressive at all, but at the same time one can't ignore those pieces which clearly aren't pop style songs.

"Mama" opens the album and was released as the first single, but it is hardly a standard "pop" song by any measure. It has a darker sound than one would expect for a Genesis song, though it does fit well with other songs on the album. The song didn't do very well on the U.S. pop charts, though it did reach #4 in the UK. "That's All" comes next and it is more of a standard pop tune, soft and simple and not surprisingly it did better in the U.S. as a result. The last song(s) on the first half of the album is/are "Home By the Sea". Though split into "Home By the Sea" and "Second Home By the Sea" this is really one piece and is a good example of how Genesis still incorporated progressive elements in their songs. The song was played on tour for years after this album and was often a showpiece with its extended instrumental section. The piece also works well with "Mama" in giving the album a somewhat eerie feel up to this point with the exception of "That's All".

The second half opens with "Illegal Alien" a light and humorous piece which suffered from overplay. It was released as a video, but after hearing and seeing it a few times it tends to become annoying. "Taking it All Too Hard" is next and is another typical soft-rock type pop song. Being on the same album as "That's All" and "It's Gonna Get Better" made it somewhat redundant. It was released as a single but didn't do particularly well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album, very underrated 5 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is such an underrated album. This was at the stage where the band had just started to reach out more to a wider audience and the first single "Mama" which opens procedings is an absolute classic.Phil Collins surpasses himself with the vocal on this track. Brilliant.
"Illegal Alien" & "That's All" were also successful singles and typified the new commercially-minded approach the band were taking at the time. "It's gonna get better" is a typical Genesis ballad of the highest order. "Silver Rainbow", "Taking It All Too Hard" & "Just A Job To Do" are also all fine tracks but they don't really stand out.
This brings us nicely on to the highlight, not only of this album, but of all the band's output since becoming a trio following the departure of Steve Hackett. I'm referring,of course, to the epic "Home By The Sea" and "Second Home By The Sea". This pair of tracks showcase Genesis at their absolute best. It marries together their new found commercial style in the former case, with their grand instrumental epic style which was their trademark during the Peter Gabriel era, in the latter. The effect is absolutely stunning. Even if you don't listen to the rest of the album, it is worth buying just for Home By The Sea. If you like Genesis even just a little bit, you will love this I assure you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Multichannel mix great. Album good in parts. 8 Oct 2007
Format:Audio CD
This was one of the first Genesis albums I listened to, and it's an odd one. I've always loved tracks 1-4 (Home by the Sea being my favourite), and as these songs have all become live favourites i'm probably not alone. Tracks 5 onwards have always either bored or annoyed me.

However, I have been very impressed by the multichannel mixes of the Genesis albums so far, and I am very impressed by this. My favourite tracks really come alive in 5.1 surround, with good use of the rear speakers and a real sense of extra space. As usual, I lost interest as soon as track 5 started, and i've not yet explored the bonus material.

I've listened to both the SACD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 mixes (can't tell the difference between them with my ears and system, so non SACD owners with a surround system shouldn't feel short changed) and they are really good.

My main priority is the multichannel mix. The other reviews criticising the stereo layers are worth reading, though. There seems to be a recurrent problem with many of the 5.1 releases of classic albums emerging. The CD stereo layer is frequently felt to be inferior to earlier CD releases. Reviewers have said this in reference to several Genesis re releases and other artists too. If it's a definitive stereo version you want, read the other reviews carefully; you may be better off with the 1994 remasters if you can still find them. If you like the album and want to give your surround system a workout, then get this. I've got all of the Genesis re releases so far, and the multichannel mixes of all are good.

Edit: I've been trying to compare the old CD / new CD mix / stereo SACD versions of "That's all" in an attempt to get to the bottom of this issue.
