5.0 out of 5 stars Jellyfish Chill, 11 Oct 2008

I love this gadget!
If you've ever seen an underwater documentary that feature Jellyfish, you'll know how gracefull & peacefull they are to watch.
Well thanks to this gadget, they can live in peace and serenity on your desktop.

3 very life-like jellyfish, glide, float & dart around silently bathed in beautiful coloured lights. The light gently morphs from 1 colour to another. Absolute tranquility, to captivate anyone who sees them.

The tank is easy to set up, but don't miss the 'washing-up liquid' bit.
Then after around 24 hours, any little bubbles that have appeared, should have dissolved.

(If you don't add a spot of 'washing-up liquid' the bubbles don't dissapear, and stick to your jellyfish making them stick near the top of the tank.)

I put a little couloured fish-tank gravel in the bottom of my tank, which helps reflect the light back up.

I like to put on a little 'Enigma' relax with a large glass of 'Malt' and watch my Jellyfish.

'Chillin'

4.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous, and this is how to get it to work !, 28 Dec 2008

It really is a wonderful thing to watch, very inspiring, (i was actually inspired to buy this by the amazing film 'Invincible' with Tim Roth, and the beautiful large tanks full of jellyfish he ponders on in the movie)... even though they could have made the jellyfish perhaps a bit more complicated, less mushroom-like... but anyway, it still is an addictive thing to watch...

Like many people, I was initially tortured by the little airbubbles that kept them afloat the tank, and which kept them from dancing and floating around the tank, like they should do.

Here are the rules to follow:

1) Absolutely no normal tap water. ONLY 100% pure distilled water. I initally tried a mixture of tap and distilled water, as I didnt think the tank would need so much water. But after hours of torturous trying to get rid of tiny bubbles, I discarded my mixture and went back to the shop to buy a big 5 litre bottle of distilled water.

2) Fill the tank with some distilled water mixed with a squirt (not just 'a few drops')of Palmolive. Soak the creatures in this so they are completely covered with it... I call it marinating them...

3) Remove jellyfish temporarily, and rest them, for example on a sponge or towel, then discard the water from the tank and then slowly and carefully fill the tank with pure distilled water, letting it run from the bottle down one of the sides of the tank, so to put as little air into the water as possible. When the tank is full, add, again, not just 'a few drops' but a nice squirt of Palmolive to the water and stir arond very gently... dont worry, there won't be any foam in the end, even when the system is running... On the contrary, the washing up liquid keeps the water nice and oily, without any little bubbles forming

4) gently place the jellyfish into the water by putting them in 'cup first', ie. let the inside of their tops become filled with water so they sink to the bottom upside down... use the end of a wooden spoon or other blunt intrument to swirl them around until all air bubbles have left them, if there are any. At any time, if there are airbubbles, simply take the jellyfish out and repeat the process.

5) Slowly place the top onto the tank and then connect tank to electricity. Start the system. If after a while, Jellyfish keep floating at the top, switch off and unplug, remove them and then re-submerge them again.. also make sure you 'wipe' off any airbubbles sticking to the inside of the tank, use a blunt instrument, like a wooden stick or plastic spoon. Before you go to the next step, make sure they have floated around for a few hours and have had a good night's rest with the system thoroughly switched off and unplugged

6) if on the next day you see them or one of them floating at the top (which they shouldnt do when electricity is switched off), take them out again carefully and place on a towel, then add an extra bit of Palmolive to the water and stir, then carefully place jellyfish inside, again letting their tops fill themselves with water so they sink down, you can use a wooden stick for that. Start system, and they should now move around the tank beautifully, with not a single tiny bubble ever forming on their tentacles or inside their tops. When the system is switched off, they should all be at the bottom, naturally.

I really think the secret is, ultimately, pure distilled water and definitely more washing-up liquid to the water than suggested in the instructions, but again, before increasing the amount yet again, do give them a nights rest. Of course you mustn't use any fancy stuff such as washing up liquid with oils etc, just normal palmolive, green or blue is perfect..

smaller than i expected it to be but great none the less, my tip, careful poking of the jellyfish with a pencil to turn them upside down gets the bubbles out that keep them stuck to the top of the tank. once all the bubbles were gone they floated perfectly :-)
