generation x's self-titled debut is by far their best and most punky album. forget buying boxsets, compilations, and 'best-of's, this is the only gen x album you'll ever need. for fans of the band's later, poppier, 80s work and billy idol's solo career, this album probably isn't for you. even tho' this is lightweight stuff compared to the pistols, et al, it's still punk.
although their songs were very rarely about much at all and billy idol's gorgeous (sorry!) sneer was a straight ripoff of elvis, these guys more than made up for it with the contents of their debut.
the cd holds 11 original album tracks and 5 great bonus tracks.
'generation x' is an album of fun, catchy, high-energy, punk-pop tunes. there are no standouts here- they're all brilliant. billy's attitude-filled, snarling vocals, trademark sneer and peroxide good looks are especially dominant. bob andrews' wailing guitar licks are absolutely outstanding throughout and, OH, the solo that finishes 'youth youth youth'!

the drumming by mark laff thunders along nicely, really propelling the album.
this is a fantastic page in the punk encyclopaedia and anyone who appreciates punk should warm to this rapidly.
a bona-fide 5 star album. well done lads!

5.0 out of 5 stars Punk-pop at its priapic best 11 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Although Generation X were close to the genesis of punk they never enjoyed the credibility of the Clash etc. This was probably to do with their pretty-boy looks and the fact that their songs were rarely actually about anything. However, for sound and excitement they were superb, which this collection, produced by Martin Rushent (the backroom genius who also produced the Buzzcocks) proves. Ignore the sometimes ropey lyrics and get into the sound! The additional tracks include an obscure b-side called "This Heat" which is, basically, perfection in just over 2 minutes. I can't stop playing this song.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Punk Records Ever! 24 April 2002
Format:Audio CD
For anyone who likes punk or Billy Idol, this CD is a must! This is one of my favorites of all time. Great catchy pop melodies with some screeching guitar licks by Bob Andrews and cool bass riffs by Tony James. Also contains great b-sides not on original LP. The one drawback is that the song "No No No" is not included which is the flip of Ready Steady Go and my favorite track. What a shame! Anyway, this CD still rocks!

As earlier reviews make clear this isn't hard punk but it is superb pure punk, although the final track Youth Youth Youth did veer, for 1978, dangerously close to heavy metal. Read more
