My youngest son (8 at the time) had asked for a RC helicopter for Christmas but I thought it would be too difficult for him to fly so I didn't get one. But then a friend of my older son (11) brought his round and gave us a demo and let my boys try it too. I was surprised how quickly they got the hang of it and despite several crashes it seemed really robust...so my mind was changed and I got him one for his birthday instead. My older son decided to buy himself one too with some Christmas money so we now have two Syma S107G's buzzing round the house (same model but different colours using different frequencies). They are having great fun with them.
They are fairly robust but accidents do happen and sooner or later something might break but luckily you can buy parts relatively cheaply so I'd say its worth buying a replacement parts set in advance of any mishaps.
My husband has already had to replace a fixing on the main shaft - which was rather fiddly and required a very fine screwdriver but he eventually managed it with the help of a Youtube 'how to...' video clip.

Bought as I'm learning to fly a 4 channel fixed pitch single rotor helicopter but am having difficulty with orientation when the heli is not facing forwards. I want to practice this more on something more gentle to control and I know this model to be easy to fly, stable and capable of withstanding a few knocks.
My knowledge of RC helicopters is limited but I think this model is a good toy that most people will learn to fly very quickly. My reservation is perhaps that I think one might also outgrow it fairly quickly and want the movement and controls (a 4 channel fixed pitch introduces side to side movement and the tail rotor controls the rotation - more like a real helicopter) more advanced types offer.
Either way, in my case, I think it's a step I need and I think the price is such that one wouldn't worry too much if they soon found they want to move on.

mine arrived wouldnt fly for more than 2 mins then wouldny fly complained to supplier at first not much help checked this and that emailed back was told to charge battery etc which i had done after 4 days off emails i was told the battery was at fault yippeee!! i got a new one sent out wat a fiddle to fit works fine now great fun but to be honest the fun dissaperard basically in the first day pity

good fun toy
The helicopter is quite hard to handle at first. but once you learn to hover and move it is great fun to play with. Just don't use it out side!
