Product Description

Metal Church "Generation Nothing" marks the bands 10th full length studio release and boasts the return to the band's classic metal sound, says founding member Kurdt Vanderhoof, "It has elements of both the first album and the "The Dark", but still embraces the new sound of the band without chasing the past." Born out of the West Coast Metal scene in the 80's, Metal Church quickly became one of the standout talents of their genre. The band's first release simply entitled "Metal Church" postured the band as one of the pioneers of the thrash/metal scene, while their sophomore release "The Dark" was championed as one of the premier metal releases of the 80's. Now with the current band's line up, Kurdt Vanderhoof (guitar), Ronny Munroe (vox), Jeff Plate (drums), Rick Van Zandt (guitar) and Steve Unger on bass, "Generation Nothing" combines the best elements of the band's early roots with modern day lyrical content and a revived hunger that delivers an electric assault of anthemic & epic metal songs!

Good to see Metal Church back in the studio again, after they disbanded a few years ago.
When I reviewed their 2006 release "A light In The Dark", I stated that it was a shame that Ronnie Monroe's vocals was a bit of a let down, as the album itself was excellent.
Well, the five years hiatus has worked a treat.
Not only do we have the usual high standard tracks, with the usual ferocious metal riffs, but this time the vocals are spot on, which makes the album a joy to listen to.
It's straight forward non stop metal from the off.
As the vocals are much better now, this is probably their best album to date (yes, including The Dark).
Recommended for all those that still love the 80's metal scene.

First of all it is nearly impossible for a band to recreate that epic sound that fans deem the "glory years", especially after lineup changes, Wayne's death(R.I.P brother), and Mike Howe retiring.

Long time fan of Metal Church, and I caught their last show when they decided to close the church down after Rocklahoma in the US. Now Vanderhoof and company are back, and although most critics didn't give glowing reviews regarding the band for their newest release, the CD has some catchy riffs and moments where some songs send you back in time to that classic sound. From the opening song Bulletproof to the closing track Media Horse, Monroe does a phenomenal job on the album, and this album has been in my CD player rotation along with the new Death Angel since they were released. I hope that the band, although it may not be the "BIG" comeback album everyone has begrudged them for, shows a glimmer of greater things to come and the METAL CHURCH are back in form and on tour!

Best CD since "The Dark" 3.5 stars -- could have been better 24 Oct 2013
By Richard J. Brzyski - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This CD is full of chunky guitar riffs and blistering solos by Kurt Vanderhoof and Rick Van Zandt; innovative, powerful, and at times complex drumming by Jeff Plate, who also locks it down tight with bassist Steve Unger; and let's not forget vocalist Ronny Munroe, who REALLY steps it up - those folks who have felt for years that it's just not a TRUE Metal Church album without David Wayne's unique vocal stylings (I've been guilty of this myself) will be happily surprised - Mr. Munroe sings with a conviction and passion that fits perfectly with the intensity of the songs, and his upper register wails and shrieks are right out of the Wayne handbook, which puts him in elite company. He has really found his niche on this record, and has never sounded better. That being said there are however flaws with this CD !!!Songs like "Scream", "Dead City" and "Jump The Gun", no matter how often I listen to them , just don't do it for me musically and or lyrically (the lyrics are really weak on these songs). Now the rest of the CD -- really is awesome and fun to listen to and is very reminiscent of old Metal Church, from the first Cd and "The Dark" era. Which is what I was hoping for when I bought this CD. Songs like "Bulletproof","Generation Nothing", Noises in the Wall", "Suiciety" and "The Media Horse" , will have you clamoring for more !!!!!!

Solid modern Metal Church 24 Oct 2014
By Wuchak - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
When I first heard this CD I thought it was pretty mediocre and I think the reason for this is that the first 2-3 tracks, while solid metal songs, are nothing to get excited over. The good news is that the album gets better from there.

GENERATION NOTHING is vocalist Ronny Monroe's fourth and final album with metal church after a ten-year stint. As such, he's done more albums for Metal Church than previous vocalists David Wayne (RIP) or Mike Howe, who each did three. While I wasn't sure about Ronny at first, he won me over with his Wayne-ish voice and excellent front-man presence. The fact that he convincingly pulled off both "Fake Healer" and "Watch the Children Pray" live tells you everthing you need to know and I desperately hope he returns to the Church fold. We'll see how far he can go on his own; at least with Metal Church he had a great writer (Kurdt Vanderhoof) and was able to tour the world and appear at great metal festivals, like Wacken.

Like I said, GENERATION NOTHING gets better as it progresses (unlike their eponymous first album, which starts great and then gets mediocre in the second half), but the initial songs on GENERATION NOTHING get better with repeat listens, i.e. the punkish "Bullet Proof" and "Dead City.

What I like best about the CD is the versatility. It's not a one-trick pony. In short, the CD presents a nice smorgasbord of metal.

Although there's no stunning hit like "Fake Healer" or "Watch the Children Pray" there are, of course, highlights. The 9-minute "Noises in the Wall" is probably my favorite, followed by "Hits Keep Comin" and "Media Horse." "Suiciety" (especially the awesome mid-section), the thrashy "Scream" and the Sabbathy "Jump the Gun" are good as well, but -- really -- all the rest of the songs are of about equal quality. It's just a matter of personal preference or mood.

"METAL CHURCH RESSURECTED!!!" 11 Nov 2013
By EVLROB - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
LET ME START OFF BY SAYING METAL CHURCH RELEASED THEIR SELF TITLED ALBUM "METAL CHURCH" IN 1985 AND THEIR FOLLOW-UP "THE DARK" IN 1986. BOTH OF THESE ALBUMS ARE ICONIC MUSIC FROM THE METAL UNDERWORLD OF OLD AND WERE THE ONLY TWO METAL CHURCH ALBUMS (IN MY OPINION!) THAT WERE TOP NOTCH "OLD SCHOOL" HEAVY METAL. THE NEW ALBUM "GENERATION NOTHING" SEEMS LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED IN 1987/88 AS THE FOLLOW-UP FROM "THE DARK" AS IT SOUNDS LIKE THE FIRST TWO ALBUMS DID. THE SINGER RONNY MUNROE SINGS IN THE STYLE OF DAVID WAYNE "GOD REST HIS SOUL" AND THAT IS A DAMN GOOD THING! SIMPLY BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT MOST OF US OLD SCHOOL FANS OF METAL CHURCH WANTED. IT BRINGS BACK THE SOUND THAT MADE THESE GUYS RECOGNIZABLE IN THE FIRST PLACE, FOR EXAMPLE: HOW QUEENSRYCHE'S NEW SINGER TODD LA TORRE SINGS IN THE STYLE OF JEFF TATE AND ROB DUKES OF EXODUS SOUNDS LIKE A CROSS BETWEEN PAUL BALOFF AND STEVE SOUZA, OR TIM "RIPPER" OWENS REPLACING ROB HALFORD. THESE REPLACEMENT VOCALIST'S ONLY MIMIC THE SOUNDS OF EARLIER VOCALIST'S THAT MAY HAVE MADE A BAND MORE SUCCESSFUL OR POPULAR IN THE PAST, BUT THEY ALSO BRING THEIR OWN STYLE INTO IT AS WELL AND "IT WORKS!". THAT IS WHAT MADE US FANS OF A PARTICULAR BAND IN THE FIRST PLACE! AND LET'S NOT FORGET ABOUT THE MUSIC ITSELF ON THIS ALBUM!!! MY GOD, THE WAY IT IS CONSTRUCTED AND PLAYED IS ALL IN THE SAME DIMENSION AND FORM FROM THE BANDS ROOTS....THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! THAT IS WHY IT SOUNDS LIKE A FOLLOW-UP ALBUM FROM A RECORD 20 OR 30 YEARS AGO, BUT I LOVE IT! AND MOST OF YOU DO TO. THE NEW ALBUM IS FANTASTIC AND IS IN "TRUE" METAL CHURCH FORM! I CANNOT WAIT FOR A FOLLOW-UP OF THIS NEW ALBUM....METAL CHURCH IS BACK!!!
