Product Description

As Inspector Paco Ruiz stands before a Nationalist firing squad he thinks his time is up. But just before the order to shoot he is reprieved by Major Gomez. Someone has shot the general''s dog and Gomez wants an experienced detective to solve the case.'

From the Author

The second Inspector Paco Ruiz mystery
The book is set at the start of the Spanish Civil War, and features Paco Ruiz, who first appeared in 'A Murder of No Consequence'.

Paco, now a militiaman, thinks his last moment has come when he is captured by the enemy and marched before a firin squad, but just before he is about to be shot, he is saved by the machiavellian Major Gomez. He needs Paco's skill as a detective, the major explains, because a very important case has to be solved - the man who killed the general's dog must be brought to justice. At first, Paco refuses, even though Gomez threatens to kill him, but the major knows exactly what he needs to do to ensure that the detective has no choice but to co-operate.

Even from the start of the investigation, Paco is aware of the fact that as soon as he solves the case he will be executed, but despite that he becomes deeply intrigued by it. The more he learns, the more he realises that there is more to the case than the simple death of an animal, but even he has no idea that before the investigation is over, there will be two more brutal murders.

5.0 out of 5 stars A murder story with an atmosphere that wraps around you., 19 May 2000

This review is from: The General's Dog (Hardcover)
A unique whodunnit. What sets it apart is the wonderful description of Spain and the Spanish Civil War. It has a very closed feeling to it; the plot is set in a small Spanish village in the mountains north of Madrid, where much of the fighting in the civil war took place. The main character is Inspector Ruiz who, through his own military experience, is quite disgusted with politics but decides to go off to fight the fascists. He is made prisoner and forced by his captors to take up a murder case: he has to find out who has killed the general's dog. Of course, things are never as simple as they are first made out to be, and the infighting between the officers and the relationship between the old general and his attractive young wife complicate matters. Life in the village and the soldiers' lot billeted there is described very vividly. The author obviously understands Spain and its people very well. Of interest to anyone who knows Spain, or would like to know more about its recent history, and enjoys a good thriller.
