Product Description

Product Description

What are the indications for necrosectomy? How you perform an EUA for acute peri-anal sepsis? What do you understand by the term Early Goal-Directed Therapy (EGDT)? Remember: this is a consultant's exam, and giving a range of options is not good enough. You must tell the examiner what you as a consultant are going to do. The FRCS is a uniquely challenging prospect; highly detailed, wide-ranging and encompassing both theory and practice. Preparation for this exam can be very difficult, and resources tailored to it are scarce. As the consolidated notes of a recent successful candidate, this book is an essential resource when preparing for the viva. The wide variety of questions require you to define, diagnose or choose between treatment options, while MCQs and SBAs help you to objectively evaluate your progress - a unique supplement to your study plan. Answers provided are comprised of an invaluable combination of detailed written answers and lists that will remind you of key points and help you structure your preparation.

Fair play to Mr Brennan, he's typed up his revision notes and persuaded someone to publish them. Unfortunately this seems to have lacked any form of editorial process. There are gaping holes in the material covered (and this is not a subtlety, some headings are followed by rows of dots where presumably there was an intention to add content). More worryingly, there are several parts presented as fact that are blatantly wrong (eg all AAAs should be treated by EVAR). The second part of the book has some SBA/EMQs, which I have not read in great detail as I bought it having already passed section 1, but there are plenty of other places to access questions that do not involve buying this book.
There are practically no revision books available specifically for FRCS so people may feel that this book is worthwhile (I did). It is not, and actually if you repeat some of the stuff in it you may fail.

Unfortunately a very poor book, editorially and factually. Lots of missing facts, typing errors and more worryingly incorrect statements. Some of the references to the evidence are wrong (eg pertaining the PPI in upper GI bleed)and draw the wrong conlcusions.

At best, it might expose a few random areas where you have gaps in your knowledge or highlight a few querky questions the examiners like to ask. I really wouldnt use it to revise from.

I have read all the chapters of this book. Lot of errors throughout. Some statements such as steroid for clostridium colitis are totally wrong. The book was not proof read. The author should retract this book and include some senior co-author to improve the contents and then republish. I have wasted my time and money by buying this book
