Excellent primer for a new world 25 July 2013
By Jeffery M. McNulty - Published on
Format: Paperback
Not only is this a great history of the struggle for gender and sexual equality, (a subject I thought I was pretty well versed in for an open minded bisexual male) this book takes you into the future armed with the knowledge that queers and allies alike will need to make this world a better place. Don't let the "for Beginners" in the title fool you, this book is so well researched you would have to have an advanced degree in gender studies not to get something out of it. That being said, the format of the "For Beginners" style, complete with excellent comic illustrations and interesting asides, allows one to take it all in with out feeling overwhelmed. I literally read this book cover to cover without switching to a "lighter" novel mid-way as I often do during my nonfiction reads.
In a time when people are embracing their true selves and LGPTQA people are everywhere even in the media, this is exactly the book EVERYONE should read, whether you are a LGBTQA person just beginning your journey into selfhood, a long time fighter for the queer cause, or someone interested in becoming a true ally to the many people who continue to be marginalized through out the world.

Get Your Fluorescent Highlighter Ready 9 Sep 2013
By Rudolf H. Kellmann - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Ms. Garbacik has written a comprehensive and powerful study that will educate individuals, especially those interested in social justice, about the complex issues involving gender identification and sexuality. The author points out with clarity and authority that ignorance, misinformation and misunderstanding about gender and sexuality has ,unfortunately, caused and continues to cause oppression and disadvantage to people who do not conform to traditional but narrow sex-gender definitions. This is a thoughtfull and well-written book, and the fact that this reviewer has highlighted items on almost every page points to its interest and importance.

This is a fantastic book about gender and sexuality. It contains thorough scientific explanations and presentation of pertinent theories, yet it is completely accessible and a pleasure to read. I will be using it in a college course I'm teaching next year.

Respectful, easy to read but full of information 25 Aug 2014
By Amy L. Gilliland - Published on
Format: Paperback
"Understanding how we got here is the first step in understanding what needs to change" says Jaimee Garbacik. I found this book to be accessible and dense, but easy to read. I felt I was being talked TO, not AT. I could clearly see the connections the author made using research from various disciplines. I understood history differently. The tone of the book was respectful - for the reader, for the persons whose lives were described in the book, and the researchers who steered society so wrong years ago. This book is excellent as a textbook that will reach readers of various ages. But it is also the perfect book for a person who wants to understand gender issues more deeply: whether it is how gender stereotyping affects one's job prospects or for people with a transgendered family member. As an AASECT certified sexuality educator, I learned from this book and wish it had been available years ago. Highly Recommended!
