Product Description

Product Description

From the very beginning of the computer gaming industry, women have been involved - as players, artists, programmers, producers, managers and even CEOs for premier game development houses. Why is it then, that most games are not developed to include women as part of the audience? This text explores the answers to this question and examines the relationship between women and computer games, both the women in the gaming industry and the women who serve as a market or potential market for computer games. Written for game designers, developers and publishers, the book explains the benefits of considering gender differences in game development and marketing. Using popular game titles as examples, the book explores why these games appeal to such a predominantly male audience, and investigates the key differences between male and female entertainment criteria. It also explains how males and females differ in regard to reward systems and learning styles, and how this information can be used to enhance game play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Resourcefull, 2 May 2009
By R. Cunningham "Student" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am currently studying the issue of Gender Representation in Games Design for a university project and this book has been an excellent source of information. Sheri Graner Ray explores the historical contexts of gender diverse games, explaining some of the early issues companies (Such as Her Interactive and Purple Moon) faced when trying to enter the industry. She also goes on to explain the social and psychological behaviours of women when it comes to using computers and gaming, and how these behaviours differ from men. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the critical study of games, including gender representation.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on this Topic., 5 Sep 2008
After reading dozens of books on the topic, I must say that this is certainly one of the best. The text is clear and engaging, the jargon is kept to a minimum, the examples are relevant, and when you finish reading it, you feel you have certainly learned something. A very useful resource for designers and academics alike!
