Product Description

Product Description

Gemstones of the World is the single, cornerstone volume that every hobbyist, jeweller, jewellery maker and rock-hound needs. This updated edition contains a new chapter on the treatment of gemstones, expanded information on whats 'New on the Market' and 400 additional stones. More than 1,500 full-colour photos showcase each precious and semiprecious stone in its rough, natural, polished and cut renditions. Each entry offers complete information on the gemstones formation, structure, physical properties and characteristics, along with the best methods of working, cutting and polishing it. There are even full treatments of lesser-known gems; a special section on rocks as precious stones; and organic gem materials. Charts and tables (including the 'double fraction' figures that experts want) help collectors identify unknown gemstones and check for genuineness.

An informative book 28 July 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book was bought for my dad. It has loads of nice pictures which are very helpful for comparison and identification. For example, I have identified some moss agate with great confidence because they look exactly like the ones shown in the book. However, I've noticed that the spectra (I mean the pictures) included in the book are very limited. Although the abosorption lines (shown as numbers) of many gemstones are provided in a long table, they are less distinctive than pictures. Overall, this is a wonderful book.

Having been shown the Swedish edition of this book by a jeweller in Gothenburg, I decided to buy this edition. I have not put it down since. As someone who is both a scientist and a lover of jewellery, this book has provided a wealth of information on all manner of gemstones, from interesting trivia, through scientific data and through to what to look out for and avoid if you are looking to buy a gemstone. If I can recommend this book for nothing else however, I would recommend it for the ideas it will give you for alternative stones to buy to match a given colour or type of gemstone. For example, I will now be taking a much closer look at buying precious beryls, which I have found are the same as emeralds and aquamarines, but of different colours; beautiful stones often at a lower cost than their better known brothers. I have also found that a number of stones I was intending to buy should be avoided for various reasons. For this reason alone, I consider it money well spent buying this book.

In summary, if you have any sort of interest in gemstones (and also to a lesser extent, minerals) I highly recommend this book.

having had a keen interest on this subject for some years, I find this book very helpful and as it is up to date most of the recently found gems have at least some description in the book. All in all, an excellent book for those interested in gemstones.
