Product Description

Review

"... this is the book I have been waiting for. It is an affordable, excellent reference book with every diagram and chart necessary for the identification of gemstones and gem material."
Jewellery Time, April 2000

Reviews of first edition:

'Gemmology is a most welcome update and expansion of his 'Beginner's Guide to Gemmology...It fills a gap in practical gemmological literature' - Gemmological Newsletter

'...it is clearly well-written, factually sound, well illustrated, and combines the virtues (and fortunately avoids the mistakes) of its acknowledged predecessors such as Webster's 'Gems', Anderson's 'Gem Testing', and the GAGB's teaching notes...Well done Peter. This book is a most useful contribution to the literature and can only assist Australian student of gemmology' The Australian Gemmologist

'This readable book on gemmology is slanted to both beginning and advanced students of the science of gemmology, and like Read's previous book on this subject will probably become a standard text.' Lapidary Journal

Product Description

This second edition 'Gemmology' has been expanded and updated throughout by the well known writer and editor of Butterworth-Heinemann's gemmology series, Peter Read. This is a much needed update of a classic text and new syllabus information and sample examination theory papers for the Gemmological Association's Preliminary and Diploma courses are included. The additions also incorporate more recent developments, such as the introduction of synthetic moissanite and the De Beer's instruments for distinguishing between natural and synthetic diamonds.

'Gemmology' still serves as a useful reference guide for gemmologists detailing the latest natural and synthetic gem materials and is an invaluable text for anyone in the gemmological profession.

* Much needed update to a classic text
* Best author to write this book
* New information for the relevant exams and courses with techniques and questions

Wonderful book 12 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a very useful and handy book for students of Gemmology. In many ways it is easier to follow than the proprietary study books and of course just the right size to read on the tube! I've read it once and started again for my exams very soon... Shame the photos are in b/w.

This book is very informative and easy to read. Anyone studying Gemmology will do well to get it. It is a bit techincal, so may not be a 'read for pleasure' book unless you have a keen interest in the study of gemstones.

good content! 23 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
In my opinion this is a great book for someone starting in Gemmology. Well written, easy to read and covering all the major topics. My only regret goes for the limited number of colour photos. It serves its purpose as a study book.
