I'm going a lot more strobist photography now days & got this as an easy to use gel holder.

It works fine, is easy to put of the flash etc. My main gripe is that it's not custom made for the Canon 580EX II so does not follow the contours of the flash perfectly and even after messing about with placement, there remains a small air gap around the holder and the flash.

All in al though, it does the job, is easy to use but if I'm brutally honest, it is overpriced for what is an incredibly ssimple piece of moulded plastic!

It Melts 1 May 2012

It bought this reasonable priced product to advance my photography a little. The instructions for use are very simple you get a stout elastic band to hold a casinign that in turn the coloured gel fit into Ubfirtunatele my gel melted onto my speedlite cover after 4 shots, and then googling this problem I see that its commone and the gel should not be in contact with the speedlite ( it simply gets too hot, put your hand on your speedlite when you fire it to test this !!!( be careful though), so now I have ordered a different product that gives me a gap

Having just started working with canon spedlights and gels I quickly discovered I needed a way to keep them over the flash head that wasn't going to drive me insane. This gel holder fits over the head of the 480ex and 480exii way better than the 580exii, where the small curves near the front push the gel holder 5mm or so forward.

I am yet to run scrupulous tests but it seems to work OK. I just hope that I don't notice light leaking through the gaps when I'm gelling my 580exii.

The only major complaint (and I only have myself to blame for not noticing this when I ordered) is the extortionate postage costs for postage to Europe. I am an expat living in the Netherlands and know exactly how much an item like this should cost to send across the North Sea. It shouldn't have been anywhere near 7 quid! I guess I got done there but hey-ho. It will save me some grey hairs pulling gaffers tape on and off my speedlights! If I find that this item works well in the long run I will probably (begrudgingly) shell out for another couple and have them mailed to my family address in the UK instead!

Oh... and it's pretty pricey for what it is really - a bit of bent perspex with a black rubber band. But with no-one else selling something similar this manufacturer has the Amazon market cornered.
