I came across this CD last year and loved it! As a devotee of Gilbert and Sullivan, The Geisha seemed like discovering a new G&S opera. I was so taken by the show having listened to this CD that I have persuaded my local opera company (Southgate Opera) to perform The Geisha in Potters Bar in February 2009. We should have more of these older musicals performed more often else they will just disappear.

I came across "The Geisha" here quite by chance when seeking something else,I am so glad that I did.
As has been said previously, this is like a new G&S Opera, but one that stands on it's own and is not merely a G&S copy.
Now recorded by a strong professional cast and orchestra, this is a musical work that any G&S fan(or any other light opera fan) would not want to miss.
What a shame that such works were allowed to drop out of sight, eclipsed as they inevtiably were by G&S.
I shall be playing this disc quite a lot and for a long time too.

A real treat to get a copy of 'The Geisha' Sidney Jones musical that I played in during the early sixties. Well produced and exceptionally well sung by both principals and the New London Light Opera Chorus on a good quality disc. Now lets have some more, Montague Phillips 'The Rebel Maid' would be ideal for this kind of treatment.

The similarities between the music and lyrics of Sidney Jones' `The Geisha' and the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas are obvious - and since Jones' production of this piece, plus those of `A Gaiety Girl' and `San Toy' were such long-running successes, it's odd that they're not heard more often.

I first heard of this operetta years ago, during a review on a radio programme, when the reviewer made some simpering comments that the lyrics of `Chin Chin Chinaman' were `not politically correct'. PC or not, the song itself is very amusing and sung with great gusto - as is the whole of the operetta, with the New London Light Opera Chorus and Orchestra conducted with skill and panache by Ronald Corp.

If you're a G&S fan, try this - I doubt you'll be disappointed.

All I can say is-Great melodies, witty banter wonderful arrangements. Well worth a stage revival.
Produced to cater for the taste in everything oriental, and after the G&S triumph- 'The Mikado' this light operetta was a great success in it's day, and for many years after.
Well worth enjoying.
