Book Description

The fifth tie-in novel to this hugely successful game: high-octane, all-action and telling the story of beleagued humanity, facing a powerful alien species bent on their destruction

Product Description

Marcus Fenix. War hero. Decorated Gear. Loyal son. Traitor. As the Locust Horde advances into one of humanity's last bastions, Marcus does the unthinkable: he defies Colonel Hoffman's orders and abandons his post in the middle of the battle in a bid to rescue his father, weapons scientist Dr Adam Fenix. As the Coalition struggles to defend Sera's surviving humans from the invading 'grubs', Marcus faces a court martial - and a possible death penalty. In the Slab, there are no rules and no mercy. Marcus must learn to survive in an institution populated by the most dangerous dregs of society.

Meanwhile, COG scientists continue the race against time to find a weapon to defeat the Locust - but there's another traitor - one of the most trusted men in the COG, who knew the Locust existed long before the creatures erupted from their underground warrens. Worse, there's an even bigger threat emerging: a life-form called the Lambent, which drove the Locust to the surface and that will eventually destroy all life on Sera.

As the Locust infiltrate deeper into COG territory, the Slab is in danger of being overrun. All the prisoners are released . . . except Marcus. The Locust close in while Dom Santiago mounts a last-ditch rescue bid to free the one man who can save humanity.

5.0 out of 5 stars SLABsolutely brilliant 20 May 2012
By DV4021
Format:Paperback
This book goes into a lot more detail about the relationships and emotions of the original Gears of War characters than the ones previously. Out of all the books in this series this is by far my favourite. Traviss has managed to tie together missing pieces from this period of the Gears time-line and put them all into one book, including the origins of the famous scar on Marcus's face.
There are a lot of clarifying moments throughout and the introduction of some new, well thought-out characters. Traviss writes about the struggles of living during war time and dealing with bereavement brilliantly. I would recommend reading the other books first- although it's not essential.
Overall the book closes a lot of doors and opens very few new ones, it certainly feels like the end of an era. If you've enjoyed the other books you must read this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of Win! 5 July 2012
By Bern
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've read all of Karen Traviss' Gears of War novels and loved them all. This was on a 5 star par with the others and I would strongly recommend you read it if you enjoyed any of her other works.

She does a great job on back story and character development which, for obvious reasons, you don't get a whole lot of in the game. Who wants to listen to dialog and emotions when you have a loaded Lancer! I'd say that most of her books are 80% character development and great story, and 20% action. This novel, as well as the others, complement the XBox series of GoW games well and it really left me wanting more.

As a fan of the GoW series I enjoyed finding out about the back story prior to GoW 1, and could have happily read a version of "The Slab" 10 times the length of this novel. Karen is a great writer and she does justice to the GoW series.

My only tiny complaint was the electronic version wasn't available at the time so I picked up the paperback (old skool), and the plastic film on the cover started peeling back after a few reads. Bit of a nit pick but thought it worth noting. I think the electronic version is out now so you could avoid this if you need to.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but a little over-long. 12 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was very excited when I first heard that the title for the fifth in Karen Traviss' series of "Gears" novels was to be "The Slab". There are many mysteries in the world of Sera, but perhaps one of the greatest is what actually led to Marcus Fenix's imprisonment - and what happened during his years in Jacinto's notorious prison. These events have been alluded to many times in the books and games - always with the suggestion that what happened was too terrible to be relived and recounted. I was disappointed, then, by the "reality" as presented in this latest Gears of War novel. The events that led to Fenix's imprisonment were interesting enough - although not particularly unexpected - but what happens in the prison is... not much really.

For a book that will presumably be classified as "military science fiction" (and one that's based on an action-packed series of games), there is surprisingly little in the way of action in this book. At about 600 pages in length, "The Slab" is too long, and much of the material seems repetitive, with Hoffman's endless navel-gazing accounting for far too many words. Previous entries in the series, particularly "Anvil Gate" and "Aspho Fields", managed to genuinely expand the world and history of "Gears of War", with events that are barely touched upon in the game. There's not much in "The Slab" that we haven't already been told - or worked out for ourselves.

But it's not all bad - far from it. Each of the previous books in the series has allowed us to see through the eyes of another character, giving us more information about their personal histories and a greater insight into their worlds. Dizzy, Cole and Baird in particular stand out as characters that have benefited greatly from this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite! 27 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback
As a massive gear fan I've read all the books and this was probably the most enjoyable, my favourite character is Marcus so it was nice for the book to be based on him, rather than the other books where it doesn't talk about him that much in detail, not complaining though! I enjoyed reading more into his relationship with Anya and Marcus, seeing how they became involved and how they wrote to each other. the best part for me was Marcus towering in to the prison for the first time and everyone being shocked to how big he was, and of course him slapping a few of the inmates around was great to read!! the whole book though was exciting and even though it was the long it kept it interesting all the way through and I loved the end how it was the same as the beginning of the first game. One minor bad point was there was no Baird or Cole, of course they wouldn't be involved as it was set earlier than the 1st game which is when they met, but I missed bairds comments, 10/10 though and if you have read the previous 4 then you need this book!
