5.0 out of 5 stars Epic Movie Soundtrack 17 Nov 2011
By Morpheo
Format:Audio CD
I often listen a lot of movie soundtracks, overall all the stuff from Hans Zimmer.
The first time that i listen "Gears Keep Turning" was like a...oh man, I cannot put off this melody outside of my mind!!. So, Mr.Jablonsky did it again, and I can say that this man is in the elite of the "Zimmer's School" composers.

May be is (if not the best one) one of the best soundtracks that I listened on my life, not only for the quality and the inspiration in every song, but for the feelings that this masterpiece can arrive to your mind and heart in every note. Makes you feel totally inside of a Hollywood movie.

Each song has his own sense, but each song belongs to an ALL that makes a perfect sense in this album. Songs are simply awesome, music from past Gears Of War was great, but this albums makes a big difference in this sense.

From a slow and inquietant/sad intro, opens the world of Gears Of War to the epic battle of "Gears Keep Turning"...meanwhile the "omen sound" is connecting all the pieces, like a crescendo, using minor notes.

Much pieces are music ambience, putting you in the real situation of the game characters. "Stalk City" is a great example with awesome horns during all the song. "Marcus' Rock" follow the main melody with that great violine passages.
The same happens with "Calm Before The Storm" another perfect piece.

Time to "Hanover's Favorite Son" with one of the best intros, following with epic passages that means superation, past memories, etc... "A Fine Mess" and "Loss Of A Leader" can be perfect songs for any great movie using again the main melody but in other context.

5.0 out of 5 stars built on layers from the original 23 Oct 2011

Steve Jablonsky has either been listening to the reviews of his fans, or reached the same conclusion. Gears of War 2 OST hit a pinnacle with Autumn of mankind and armoured prayer to the extent that these two tracks have become the underscores of the Gears 3 soundtrack.

Whereas Gears of war OST satisfied, Gears of war 2 broke into new territory with the tragic story arc of the search for Maria Santiago, the music of Gears 3 also ramps up the emotional ties with the breadth and scope of the story. Music is a strange creature in anything we watch or play; it can enhance or punctuate a scene by its nature, and Steve has done wonders with this composition to highlight the emotional drama, sense of loss, and gravity that in war, this is 'it'- the final last stand of humanity in an all or nothing gamble to survive.

Never has music better fit this premise; that this time it's more serious. And with the scope of the story, so it should be.

"Gears keep turning" stands out as a brooding swell to the music, setting an emotional scene remeniscent of Armoured prayer (it's the same track reworked) but somehow darker and more explicit than its father. If Armoured prayer is the COG, Gears keep turning is Marcus- deeper, quieter, restraining emotion beneath its head rag with the brooding promise of violence to come.

For sheer action and heavy use of the brass section, even the violent tracks (hammer meets anvil, deathland dance) have surprising motifs that catch you out and elevate them from the normal "balls to the wall" fighting music.

Steve Jablonsky is a well known Hollywood composer, who is probably best known for his action scores to the Transformers trilogy (although fans of the composer point to the less well known Steamboy Soundtrack as being his best orchestral score to date). Following on from his excellent score for Gears Of War 2, what you get on this album is a brilliant followup action score that surpasses his previous effort.

For those of you who are familiar with the score to GOW2, the main heroic theme that was present in that album once again makes up the majority of the thematic music in this score. Whether or not you liked this theme will really dictate how much you like this album - it is present in many of the tracks, although for the most part they are orchestrated slightly differently so the slight element of repetition didn't bother me.

A few standout tracks include "Gears Keep Turning" which is an excellent reprise of the themes from GOW2 with some additional choral chanting, "Live For Me", which was clearly inspired by Barber's Adagio For Strings and a rather nice piece, with the album finishing off with "Finally A Tomorrow" which is effectively a more heroic and upbeat version of "Gears Keep Turning" and finishes the album off brilliantly.

In terms of the music itself, the mood is very much one of action, desperation and slightly frenzied at times. The tracks themselves seemed to flow well and this made for a good listening experience on album (some score albums sound slightly disjointed).
