Product Description

Gears of War, an Xbox 360 exclusive game that blends tactical action with survival horror, thrusts gamers into a deep and harrowing tale of humankind`s epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet. The storyline plays out like a Hollywood blockbuster -- lead character Marcus Fenix pits advanced human technology against the overwhelming Locust Horde. Built around a revolutionary third-person tactical combat system and breathtaking, high-definition visuals from the Unreal Engine 3, Gears of War immerses you in a horrifying tale of war and survival.

The gameplay is focused on a fire team co-op so advanced that your A.I. teammates are indiscernible from human players. Voice recognition and real-time lip synching heighten the absorbing experience. The Unreal Engine 3 technology brings out the smallest details in the largest of battles. With GOW you`re sure to experience a rich, dynamic world where characters spring to life. Speaking of life, the battlefield is a lethal place. To survive, you must suppress your enemy with blindfire, take cover in interactive environments, and use weapons and teammates to outwit your dreaded, inhuman foes. And with a title like GOW, it would be shame if you couldn`t get online and challenge live gamers. With the next-generation of Xbox Live, you`ll be able to experience individualized matchmaking, view player statistics, earn player achievements, customize games, and build personalized gamer profiles.

  • Engaging and disturbing cinematic story.
  • Movie-like cut scenes, cinematic camera moves and in-game storytelling bring the brutal, emotionally charged narrative to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gears of war 16 Nov 2008
Platform for Display:Xbox 360|Edition:Classic Edition
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Mint game, story and characters. Harsh Learning Curve, tedious on first play through, but is then addictive. Not as short as people say, but is pretty short, but there's always gears of war 2 when you finish. Trying to complete campaign on all difficulties is also rewarding.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE ULTIMATE GAME 7 Jan 2011
By herdy1
Platform for Display:Xbox 360|Edition:Classic Edition
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I know this is old now, but I only just finally bought an Xbox 360 & this is the first game I had to play. I remember first seeing gameplay footage back in 2005 & being blown away. Well, to this day it is the finest looking game I have ever seen. And on top of that, it is one of the most intense campaigns I have played through, although it is short it is breathless action the whole way. I haven't even played the online multiplayer yet, just the single player campaign is enough for me. A lot of people seem to rate games these days on their online playability, but for those of us who still like to occasionally plough through a game without getting up against hundreds of others who do nothing else other than play online all day, and will immediately kick your ass, there is still a huge amount here to enjoy. Different levels of difficulty create constant challenge, aswell as different trophies to collect for certain achievments.
The only thing to disappoint me is that one of the levels in act 2 is now different to what was first shown back in 2005, and I think they changed it for the worst. You now pick up a vehicle which is not really all that much fun to drive, and I think the onfoot action is where the game is at its best. Anyway, just me being fussy really. Overall, I cannot find any fault with this game & it is an amazing achievement for all involed. Will be picking up the next games in the series for certain.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best trilogy ever 10 Oct 2011
Platform for Display:Xbox 360|Edition:Classic Edition
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I never play shooter games because a)its not my cup of tea, the genre never appealed to me before. b) its so gory and violent that I'd much rather stick to my very innocent Sims LOL... however this one, I saw my brother play and got involved in the story as they've concentrated in making such effort in to that and once I watched him I loved it and became engrossed in the developing story and the brilliant characters. I then dared to try to play, at first I was rubbish and then I just got better and if I can play it anyone can. I love this game so much and if you like it you will love GOW 2 and absolutely ADORE GOW 3...too bad there won't be no more and even if there was I am spoilt for any after this trilogy :( if I could give it 10 stars I would!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding for its time. 13 Nov 2012

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Getting straight to the point;
The Good:
For it's time, the graphics are unreal. Some games released today still don't have better graphics and this was released in 2006. The storyline and the characters are brilliant. Delta squad which you as Sergeant Fenix are accountable for all bounce off each other and have great chemistry making the game flow well. There are some great key moments that you would probably like to play again in chapter selection after completing the game but no matter where you start from, you can just play through to the end. The action is brilliant and the fire-fights are truly epic. The cover-and-shoot system of the fights are brilliant and the cinematic camera angles that EPIC Games has integrated into the Gears of War games puts you right in the middle of everything. The difficulties of the game that you can select from also work perfectly where casual means you can run in and kill everything and insane means having to keep your head down and await the right opportunities.
The Bad:
Due to it's time, there are a few technical glitches that can happen such as Marcus' arm (the main character) twitching all over the place while reloading but this is just occasional. I'm not going to criticise it too much on it's technical faults due it's time and placing it in relation to what the rest of the game offers, it is minor. I also find that there are some parts of the game that can be very irritating but these parts tend to be on the harder difficulties. For example, there is a part where there are 'Lambent' Wretches meaning that when you kill them, they explode. When you are in a confined space and loads of these Wretches pour in, you kill as many as you can but if you are just slightly too close when you kill them, you die too.
In Conclusion, I would recommend this game to anybody. The only problems with it are due to it's time and these are minor. These problems have been addressed in Gear of War 2. A genuine classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as repetitive as people say 12 Aug 2008
Platform for Display:Xbox 360|Edition:Classic Edition
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Yes, the game is essentially cover, shoot, cover but it is not as repetitive as some people suggest. If all you do is run for cover, especially on the harder levels, an enemy will come and melee attack you and you're dead. There are also a variety of weapons that change gameplay and the final boss is definitely more challenging than ducking behind cover and shooting; there is timing and movement involved as well. I really enjoy this game, especially co-op missions and I'm sure shooter fans won't be disappointed.

This gears of war is by far the best one in the series. All the other games where really good and did improve upon this but I feel this game is a revelation and has got me into the franchise after playing it when I was younger and got totally sucked into it. The campaign is brilliantly made and introduces Marcus Fenix, the main character in the series. The online is also really fun and challenging to play, especially the Longshot rifle which was quite amazing, by far the best sniper rifle in any game. If anyone has got an xbox and hasn't played gears of war before I would highly recommend this game as it will really surprise you how good it actually is.
