Most of us would choose to leave a country where war was about to break out: our own safety would speed our exit. What about people who choose to stay - even when told to leave - so that they can help by letting the invading forces know that they are going out under bombs in order to safeguard the ambulances - by their presence ?
Hard to believe, isn't it, that civilians - paid for out of their own pockets - choose to risk death so that others can live. This book records the daily events, during the war which Israel conducted against Gaza, a year ago. The author was there - wrote this as a daily blog - so it is first-hand knowledge, vivid, factual, and utterly compelling. Israel has many weapons that it deploys against the Palestinian national movement and one of them is a powerful public relations machine. For years, it has allowed Israel to extend illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, demolish homes, erode the rights of Palestinians and imprison and torture them, all in the name of democracy and security. In the days leading up to last winter's attacks on Gaza, Israel's public relations machine was oiled up to give its version of events and without the watchful eye of journalists -- who were denied entry into the territory -- and it appeared likely to succeed. Yet Palestinians "citizen journalists" in Gaza and a few internationals living in the middle of the conflict decided to report a very different story than the carefully controlled Israeli narrative. Sharyn Lock was one of these voices. Gaza: Beneath the Bombs I warmly recommend this book: it should be read, presented to our MPs, and widely discussed, as it shows - to some of us perhaps for the first time - that the Palestinians are a warm, delightful people who are being treated as prisoners of war, enclosed by walls and armed guards, their houses demolished, their animals killed, their fishing boats confiscated... shot at if they dare try to harvest tiny crops on their own land... prevented from leading any kind of life - so that the Israeli state can ultimately drive them out of their own country, and take their land. Sharyn's voice speaks out: we need to join the international chorus for peace, and justice, in Palestine.

Humanity beneath the bombs,

This book, written by Sharyn Lock, one of a handful of "internationals" that remained in Gaza during "Operation Cast Lead" (name given by Israeli army to operation that in fact was a massacre, shooting practice and outright agression) is a must buy for anyone wanting to understand what really happened in the Gaza Strip during December 2008-January 2009 and in the so called following "cease fire" months.
Taking the form of a diary, this book goes through 22 days of air, sea and land bombings, killings, destructions and collective punishment inflicted by the Israeli Army on the people of Gaza but also goes deep into Gazans psyche and is full of humanity and incredibly enough, humour. "Black humour as an antidote to self pity". An enlightening work by a very brave woman.

Sharyn Lock is a fellow student of mine at university and after reading this book I am truly astounded to read the most personal and touching account of the tragedies that erupted in Gaza whilst she was there! I bought the book from Sharyn in one of our lectures!!, and read the whole thing that day.
I have a new found respect for this courageous woman, the book is outstanding, had me both in smiles and tears and its a privilege to know and work with this remarkable person!
