Book Description

Where are all of the healthy gay role models? Are there healthy gay relationships out there? Can a single gay male find a mate who is emotionally available? Gay men are entitled to have good, healthy friendships and good, healthy relationships.

Gay men have often been perceived as "damaged goods" and therefore often act out in self-abusive ways by choosing inappropriate or unavailable men to date or befriend. This book helps identify personality characteristics or behaviors that get in the way of successful relationships. There is a need for all of us to take responsibility for what we bring to the relationship, and be totally conscious of what the other man also brings to the relationship.

This book addresses the struggle that gay men have to just find safety in home, employment and relationships. It also focuses on the different needs gay men have, as individuals and as a group. So this book is about working at being conscious; conscious of our own behavior and needs, and conscious of other's behavior and needs.

There are also poignant thoughts and quotes from gay men in successful relationships given to those who might benefit by their wisdom and experience. There are also many suggestions from gay men, who were surveyed, as to how to seek out a healthy date or potential partner.

You will read about what kind of relationships seem to work better than others. You also will read about gay codependent relationships and how difficult they are. There is also a section describing relationships with 2 men, 3 men and 4 men. You can also read about the gay men who choose to have a relationship with no men.

This book will help guide you to look at you and others, to help lead you to the kind of friends and relationships that will enrich your life, and make you thrive and grow. This book addresses the struggles and the hope that gay men have, to just find safety in home, employment and relationships. It also focuses on the different needs gay men have, as individuals and as a group. This book could be the one book that you read to get you moving toward positive change, and getting or keeping that "special someone."

4.0 out of 5 stars Great guide to a lasting relationship 21 Nov. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a good concise guide; it explains how partners can often have the need to feel safe. It covers vulnerability issues including having a higher addiction rate and one of the parts I found most insightful was the bit on forming new `families' with friends. I can definitely relate to that part. Overall it's very informative and I enjoyed the way real people chip in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done Dr Travis 21 Nov. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Dr Travis has put together an excellent relationship guide and whilst it is aimed at gay men it contains information that all genders and all relationships could use and benefit from. I bought this to try and understand a bit better about my son's inability to hold down a serious relationship since he has come out. It has given me great insight and understanding into some of his behaviour and the difficulties he sometimes has to face. I will be passing it onto him to read as I think it will be mutually beneficial.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gay relationships 29 Oct. 2012
By Patricio - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed reading this book. I have always thought of myself and my relationships as difficult, and while they have been, this book has allowed me to view and have a better understanding of relationships, homosexual and heterosexual. Relationships are difficult, one must invest a great deal of time to find, build, and keep one's relationship alive. We all have different understandings of what a relationship means, and that is what makes us individuals. How can we begin to "Understand Gay Relationships" if we do not communicate what is important to us as individuals. We come it'll shapes and sizes, what is right for one cannot always be right for another. I think this book is excellent for all ages and genders. No matter what your relationship status is, this book applies to all of us!

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding Gay Relationships 10 Nov. 2012
By Keith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Dr. Travis has done it again! What talent to take a huge topic and present it in meaningful and helpful form in E Book. The comprehensive material offers basic information for those who are curious or who are exploring identity of self or others. In addition it provides the reader a balanced view of the variety of gay relationships and some ways in which gays describe themselves and relationships. Lastly it provides information to assist people in their search for someone special as well as what could be termed non-conventional relationships. Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars A helpful, lighthearted and informative guide to being emotionally healthy, and finding a healthy partner. 10 Nov. 2012
By Timothy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Dr. Travis explores the diversity that exists in the gay community, and why relationships, including friendships, dating and long-term relationships, are so important to gay men. The book explains how to BE an emotionally healthy person, and how to attract a well-adjusted and compatible partner. Through anecdotes, survey results, and testimonials from gay couples in committed relationships, Dr. Travis outlines relational mistakes, as well as how to recognize and nurture a healthy gay relationship. An invaluable quick-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and very "matter of fact!" 7 Nov. 2012
By jeffersway - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Read the entire book in one sitting. Didn't want to stop or redirect my attention to anything else!
I thought Dr. Travis took the time to be gentle and kind when all options could have led him in another direction. The over whelming feeling of being true to yourself, no matter what your persuasion is, seemed to permeate every page. I think the everyday person will find themselves somewhere in here and especially those Gay men who might need some gentle, but firm, directives on how to take control of their own personal situations. I particularly loved Dr. Travis' Rule of (8) Eight! Makes way too much sense and yes, seems like it would be very challenging to accomplish. Have to admit, I'm going to put it to the test.
Definitely an easy read with a few "eye openers" to engage even the most cynical of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars As the author said, "This is not a book for everyone"... 5 Dec. 2012
By Charlene Potterbaum - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Yes, not a book for everyone, but it so happens that I co-authored a book with a gay man a few years ago, and knowing him and calling him friend has meant a lot to me. Dr. Travis' book would be such a great read, if only people could move out of their comfort zone and accept this phenomenon (homosexuality) as biological, and not a "choice." But we allow fear to get in our way, and, unless we know a gay person, we don't give it much thought. I felt the book would be a great manual for almost anyone thinking about relationship, even though the focus is on the gay community. But as the author said...this is not a book for everyone. Yet, those with tender hearts, compassion, and a love for all will feel the love in these pages. I am very glad I read it.
