I am pretty well versed in the big names of fantasy - Tolkien/Martin/Hobbs/Eddings/Gemmell/Broo
Whereas I love Lord Of the Rings, I love the story and depth more than the writing. It is my favourite book followed by the Count of Monte Cristo and 1984. If there is one author I love to read it would be Guy Gavriel Kay. I thought that Tigana, A Song for Arbonne and in particular The Lions of Al Rassan were the closest things to 1 book perfection that I have read. However I am a lover of trilogies. I like stories, not never ending sagas and histories - A Game of Thrones is starting to grate after I loved the first three.
Dark Military style fantasy is fine ( I was in the army!) but it needs to have excellent characters and excellent writing - which I found that Erikson struggled with on Gardens of the Moon although everyone says he gets a lot better!
